Flores, Meneweather, Capture Titles at Cowboy Open

The Falcons had nine individual placers
LARAMIE, Wyo. – The Air Force Academy wrestling team had a solid open to its 2019-20 campaign at the 42nd Annual Cowboy Open, Friday, Nov. 2 at the War Memorial Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Wyoming. The Falcons had nine wrestlers place within the top three of their weight class, including two weight class champions.
For the second year in a row, sophomore Sidney Flores won the elite 125 lbs. title, as he went a perfect 3-0, including two decision wins and a tech fall. The other title went to senior Randy Meneweather, who absolutely dominated the elite 165 lbs. weight class, going 5-0 with four pins and a 9-4 decision.
Two Falcons finished in second place in the elite brackets, in sophomore's Harlan Steffensmeier and Kayne Hutchison. Steffensmeier's only loss was to Meneweather in the 165 lbs. final. Hutchison went 2-1 on the day with a tech fall and a fall. The third second place finish came from freshman Anthony Hinson in the amateur 174 lbs. bracket. In his AF debut, Hinson went 3-1 with a major, tech fall, and pin.
Four more Falcons took third place in their weight class, three in the elite division and one in the amateur. Juniors Cody Surratt and Lenny Petersen took third at 174 lbs. and 141 lbs., respectively. Meanwhile, sophomore Jared Van Vleet also placed third at 133 lbs. Also at 133 lbs., this one at the amateur level, freshman Justin Pacheco took third in his collegiate debut.
Next up, the Falcons head east to Boone, N.C. to compete in the Mountaineer Open. Action on the campus of Appalachian State runs throughout the day.
