Air Force Drops Saturday Contest to Nevada

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – The Air Force volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Nevada this afternoon (Nov. 9), as it wrapped up a brief homestand at the Academy. The 20-25, 20-25, 23-25 loss snapped the Falcons' three-match winning streak over the visiting Wolfpack and moved the Falcons to 5-9 in the Mountain West.

Freshman BrookeLyn Messenger tallied a match-leading 11 kills on .400 hitting (11-3-20), while junior Cambria Galloway added 10 strikes on .333 hitting (10-4-18). Junior Andi Ahlers assisted on 37 of the team's 43 kills, while also notching one of the team's two service aces, tying for a team-high two blocks and accounting for her 13th double-double of the season with 11 digs. Classmate Alex King paced the Falcons with 12 digs, while Galloway earned the team's other ace and freshman Taleah Cooper joined Ahlers at the top of the team's blocking statistics.

Nevada took an early 3-1 lead to open the match, but Air Force evened the score at three following a kill from sophomore Vittoria Juarez and an Ahlers/Cooper block. The teams traded a pair of three-point runs, as another kill from Juarez and back-to-back scores from sophomore Bailey Keith (kill, block) re-tied the score at six. Nevada responded with six of the next seven points (12-7), before a kill from Galloway and an ace from Ahlers helped Air Force pull within two at the 10-12 mark. Nevada used another run to take a 20-13 advantage, but the Falcons continued to put down points, collecting multiple kills from Galloway (three) and Keith (two). Junior Mackenzie Robertson added a pair of points (assisted block with Cooper, kill), but Nevada claimed the final point for the 25-20 win.

The Wolfpack took another 3-1 lead to open the second set, but a kill from Juarez helped Air Force pull within one (4-5). Nevada doubled up the Falcons at 8-4 and extended its lead to nine at the 16-7 mark. Keith put down a pair of scores to halt the run and pull within six (11-17), but the Wolfpack pushed its advantage back to nine at the 21-12 mark. A kill from Ahlers sparked a 5-1 run by the Falcons that included an Ahlers/Galloway block and three kills from Messenger (17-22). Another strike from Messenger, as well as a kill from Cooper, kept Nevada at set-point, before it earned the final point for another 25-20 win.

Backed by three-straight kills from Keith, Air Force jumped out to a fast 4-1 lead to open the third set. After benefitting from three attacking errors by the Wolfpack, Galloway put down an ace to keep Air Force's lead at three (7-4). Nevada tied the set at seven, but Air Force retook the lead with back-to-back kills from Juarez and Messenger. The Falcons kept the two-point margin behind another kill from Juarez (10-8) and a strike from Ahlers (11-9), while scores from Messenger and Galloway helped Air Force push its lead out to four (15-11). Nevada scored five of the next six points to even the score at 16, while scores from Juarez and Messenger gave the lead back to Air Force (20-18). Nevada responded again to tie the set at 20 and the teams traded the next six points. Messenger (22-21) and Galloway (23-22) posted set-leading kills, but the Wolfpack tied the set at 23 and scored the final two points for the 25-23 win.

Air Force heads to California next week for its final road trip of the 2019 season. The Falcons will face San Diego State on Thursday, Nov. 14, before traveling to Fresno State on Saturday, Nov. 16.
