Air Force Falls to Army in Season Opener

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Air Force Academy baseball team fell to Army West Point in the 2019 season opener, 17-2, Friday afternoon, Feb. 15, at Alex Box Stadium on the campus of LSU. The Falcons (0-1) fell behind early, and were unable to catch up to the Black Knights (1-0).

The day was highlighted at the plate by a pair of RBI extra base hits. Senior designated hitter Daniel Jones got his final campaign as a Falcon stated the right way with a solo home run, which was the tenth of his career. Junior outfielder Ashton Easley had the other with an RBI triple. It was the eighth three-bagger of his career.

In all, Air Force had five hits on the afternoon. Junior Tommy Gillman had a solid debut, getting the starting nod at shortstop. He went 1-for-3 with a walk and run scored.

Army came out firing out of the gates, scoring five runs over the first two innings. Jones' home run made it a 5-1 game after two.

After entering in the second inning in relief, sophomore Luke Chilcutt retired 12 of 13 batters to cruise into the bottom of the fifth with the same score. There, Easley's RBI triple made it a 5-2 game with four innings to play.

From there, the Black Knights used a five-run sixth and a four-run seventh to break the game open. They tallied three more in the ninth to wrap up the 17-2 final.

The Falcons will return to the field tomorrow evening, Feb. 16, for game two down in Baton Rouge. Air Force will face off with Louisiana-Monroe inside Alex Box Stadium. First pitch against the Warhawks is set for 5 p.m. MT.
