The pair swept the conference titles to cap the second day of action at the MW Meet
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Conference titles by senior Jacob Bilvado and sophomore Maria Mettler capped the second day of action for Air Force at the 2019 Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships, which continued today (Feb. 22) in Albuquerque. In a meet that was pushed back three hours due to travel issues for several conference opponents, the Falcons collected a pair of titles and six scoring finishes.
Bilvado earned his first conference title after posting a time of 14:34.61 to win the 17-runner 5000-meter race, while Mettler completed Air Force's sweep less than 20 minutes later after clocking a time of 17:09.45 to win the 24-competitor event. Bilvado, who worked his way through the field in the early laps, took control of the race over the final two laps and cruised to a four-second victory. Mettler joined the lead group at the start and stayed with the frontrunners as the pack separated. Like Bilvado, the sophomore took over the lead in the final laps and claimed the three-second lead.
The men collected points during three field event finals today, while the women earned a pair of scoring finishes in the pole vault and added an additional top-eight finish in the 5000-meter run (Teri Brady, sixth in 17:35.61).
