
Falcons Claim Five Top-Five Finishes on Day Two of WAC Championships

The Falcons also had three new top-10 program times.
HOUSTON, Texas – The Air Force Academy men's swimming and diving team wrapped up day two of the 2019 Western Athletic Conference Championships Thursday evening, Feb. 28, at the CRWC Natatorium on the campus of the University of Houston. The Falcons had five top-5 finishes, as well as three new top-10 program times.
As a team, Air Force has scored 229 points and they sit in fourth place. They are just one point behind Cal Baptist for third place.
Junior Zach Nelson led the charge with a runner-up finish in the 200 IM, taking second with a 1:47.11. That was good for the second fastest time in program history. Not too far behind Nelson was freshman Isaac Gwin, who placed fourth with a 1:48.09. His prelim time of 1:47.27 was the fourth fastest in Academy history.
In the 50 free sprint, freshman Matthew Lattin had a blazing prelim time of 19.93, which tied the second quickest time in program history. In the finals, the rookie placed third with a 20.02. Also in the 'A' final was junior Cole McAnany, as he took eighth with a 20.79.
In the lone relay of the day, the 200 free relay, McAnany, Gwin, Lattin, and freshman Corey Shepard raced to a third place finish with a 1:20.10, the fastest of the season for the squad.
Air Force's final top-five finish came in the 500 freestyle, as sophomore Peter Lochmaier touched in, in fourth place with a 4:25.90. His prelim time of 4:25.36 was the fastest of the season for the Falcons.
Over on the diving board, the Falcons competed in the 3-meter. Sophomore Cole Armagost qualified for the 'A' final, and placed seventh with a 270.65. Freshman Jack Macceca won the 'B' final, taking ninth place with a season-best score of 283.50.
Day three of the WAC Championships continues tomorrow, March 1, with six more events. The Falcons will compete in the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, and 400 medley relay. Action from Texas begins with prelims at 9:30 a.m. MT and finals at 5 p.m. MT.
