Baseball Comes Up Short in Resumed Game at San Diego State

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Air Force Academy baseball team came up just short in a 4-3 defeat against San Diego State Thursday evening, April 18, at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The game was a resumption of the halted game from March 2, which was started at the Air Force Academy. The game resumed in the bottom of the second, with SDSU leading 2-0.

Freshman Zach Argo pitched the entirety of the resumption, totaling seven innings of work. He only allowed two runs on four hits while striking out five. The seven innings of work were a new career high.

On offense, Air Force totaled seven hits, trailing SDSU by just one. Senior Drew Wiss had a two hit game, while two of the runs were driven in by senior Nic Ready and freshman Alexander Pup.

The first 1.2 innings were played at the Air Force Academy, as the Aztecs scored two in the first two innings to lead it 2-0 early on. After the delay, the game was resumed in the bottom of the second.

After the resumption, the game was without a run until the top of the fifth. There, SDSU got a pair of runs on a two run double to make it 4-0 into the middle innings. AF got on the board in the bottom of the fifth as Ready drove in a run on an infield single to make it 4-1 with four to play.

From there, Argo carved up the SDSU lineup, tossing scoreless frames in the next four innings to keep it a three run game into the bottom of the ninth. There, the Falcons attempted a comeback, getting a pair of runs on an RBI single from Pup and a passed ball, but the comeback came up just short.

Air Force and San Diego State will be back in action tomorrow, April 19, for games two and three of the series. The doubleheader begins at 3 p.m. MT with game two following at approximately 7 p.m. MT.
