Trevor Siniscalchi claimed the first medal of the meet with runner-up honors in the steeplechase.
CLOVIS, Calif. – Backed by the sixth-fastest time in program history, Air Force senior Trevor Siniscalchi earned runner-up honors in the 3000-meter steeplechase this evening (May 10), as the track and field team continued action at the 2019 Mountain West Outdoor Championships in Clovis.
Siniscalchi, who moved from seventh to second in the final laps of the steeplechase, earned the Falcons' first medal of the championships, as he posted a career-best time of 8:50.92 to finish second. That time, a personal improvement of nearly nine seconds, is the second-fastest Academy time in six years.
The men also accounted for scoring finishes from seniors Sam Hinegardner and Garrett Coalson in the field events on Friday, as Hinegardner finished fourth in the high jump (6'9") and Coalson finished fifth in the shot put (51'0").
The majority of today's races were qualifying heats and the men did not disappoint, advancing a perfect 15-for-15. Air Force accounted for the top preliminary time in four events, including a pair of 1-2 finishes.
Senior Micah Fontaine kicked off the day with a winning time of 14.32 in the 110-meter hurdles, while classmate Sedacy Walden followed that up with the fastest qualifying time in the 400-meter dash. Walden was one of two Falcons to win their qualifying heat in that event, as sophomore Zachary Dicken finished first in his heat with a time of 47.91. Fellow sophomore Luke Zuluaga also advanced to the finals in that event, as he finished sixth overall with a time of 48.71.
Junior Terrell Bradford clocked a time of 21.25 to finish first out of 20 runners in the 200-meter dash, as Air Force advanced all four runners in the qualifying round. Senior Reece Pontious finished fourth behind a time of 21.57, while Walden and senior Miguel Molas placed seventh (21.77) and eighth (21.78), respectively. With a winning time of 1:51.62, senior Preston Roche paced the men to three of the top-five finishes in the 800-meter run, as junior Michael Rhoads and senior Gordon Kowalkowski finished second (1:51.67) and fifth (1:51.97), respectively.
The men also advanced all three of their qualifiers in the 100-meter dash – Bradford (10.60, second), Pontious (10.721, fifth), Molas (10.728, sixth), while freshman La'akea Aiu advanced to the finals of the 400-meter hurdles after finishing sixth in the preliminary round with a time of 54.12.
On the women's side, senior Jerni Self scored for the Falcons in the pole vault, while classmate Aryn Maxwell and junior Megan Irvine advanced to tomorrow's finals in a pair of 400-meter events. Self accounted a season-best clearance of 12'5¼" to finish eighth in the 20-competitor pole vault and earn the women's first points of the day. Maxwell posted the third-fastest qualifying time in the hurdles (1:01.89) to advance to Saturday, while Irvine finished seventh during the preliminary heats of the dash after posting a time of 55.56.
Freshman Jenna Kill impacted the record book during today's qualifying round, as she deleted nearly five seconds off of her previous best time to debut in ninth on the program's all-time standings (2:11.86).
The Mountain West Championships conclude tomorrow (May 11) at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis. Action is slated to begin at 2:00 p.m. (PT), with the men's discus throw.
