Air Force is 2-0 to start a season for the first time since 2012
USAFA, Colo. – The Air Force Academy women's soccer team carried its momentum from the season opener into game two, as they cruised to a 3-0 win over Texas A&M Corpus Christi Sunday afternoon, August 25, at Cadet Soccer Stadium. The Falcons are 2-0 to start a season for the first time since 2012.
Both teams had fairly equal offensive opportunities, as AF only outshot the Islanders (0-2), 14-10, while TAMUCC had the 6-5 advantage in corners. Despite the opportunities, junior Danielle Katz recorded her second clean sheet in a row while making four saves.
Offensively, freshman Lexi Romero was the superstar as she scored her second goal of the year, while assisting on the other two. In her debut Falcon weekend, she has scored two goals and made two assists for a total of six points. Scoring the other goals were junior Jillian Jamero and sophomore Bella Colandrea. Also assisting on Jamero's game-winning goal was junior Emma Nelson, who also assisted Romero's goal, while freshman Faith Lee helped contribute to Colandrea's.
The Falcons came out firing on all cylinders in the first five minutes, getting an early shot on goal and corner. This led to the opening goal in the sixth minute as a beautiful through ball from Nelson found Jamero, and she tucked it away to open the scoring. From there, the teams traded opportunities, but nothing found the net, keeping it 1-0 into the half.
Out of the locker rooms, TAMUCC had a couple opportunities, but they were thwarted to keep the shutout. Five minutes into the half, Romero found Colandrea, who dribbled her way through defenders, and buried an insurance goal at the 54 minute mark to make it 2-0.
Feeling the momentum, seven minutes later, Romero capped off her impressive weekend with a goal in the 61st minute, putting the Falcons up 3-0 and everything going their way. For the final half hour of the match, TAMUCC was able to muster four shots, two on net, but Katz was strong to keep the shutout and cap the 2-0 weekend.
Air Force will be back in action next Friday, August 30, when they host Saint Francis (Pa.) at Cadet Soccer Stadium. Kickoff against the Red Flash is set for 6 p.m. MT.
