Falcons Continue Homestand By Hosting Saint Francis on Parents Weekend
The Air Force Academy women's soccer team continues its five game homestand start to the season by playing host to Saint Francis University Friday evening, August 30, at Cadet Soccer Stadium. Kickoff against the Red Flash is set for 6 p.m. This weekend is Parents Weekend at the Academy, and a large crowd is expected for the occasion.
The game can be followed via live stats at airforcestats.com, as well as via a free live stream on the Mountain West Network. For all up to date information, be sure to follow @AF_WSOC on Twitter.
Perfect Opening Weekend
The Falcons were firing on all cylinders opening weekend, defeating Siena 2-0, and TAMUCC, 3-0. It is the best start since 2012 when AF went 2-0 to begin the year, defeating Lamar, 3-0, and Montana, 1-0.
In addition, the five goals scored were the most in the first two games of a season against D-1 competition since 2003, when AF netted four against Northern Illinois and one against Fairfield.
Rookies Making an Immediate Impact
The 2019 freshman class, which came in ranked as the 32nd ranked class according to Top Drawer Soccer, has already made an immediate impact on both sides of the field. Freshman forward Lexi Romero led all Falcons on offense with a six point opening weekend (2 goals, 2 assists).
Freshmen also tallying assists were Faith Lee and Emiley Benner. Meanwhile, freshman Kayla Milford started both games on defense, and totaled 119 minutes for a backline that allowed zero goals.
In all, freshmen accounted for 734 minutes total in the first two games, which equates to 37 percent of the total minutes played.
Scouting the Red Flash
Saint Francis enters the weekend having played just one match after their opener scheduled against Loyala (Md.) was canceled due to inclement weather. In their eventual opener, SFU drew 2-2 with UMBC. Red Flash midfielder Mariana Jaleca was named the NEC Player of the Week after she scored both goals in the contest.
Saint Francis finished 8-9-3 last season, and finished fourth in the conference with a 5-2-1 mark. They then advanced to the NEC Tournament finals before falling to No. 1 seeded Central Connecticut State, 2-1.
