Late Rally Comes up Short as Men’s Soccer Falls at UC Riverside, 2-1

Quinn Matulis of Air Force men’s soccer notched his first career goal in the effort
Riverside controlled the first half possessions, taking the first shot on frame in the 21st minute and connecting on the first strike in the 31st minute as Caio Guazelli capitalized on a scoring opportunity.
Sophomore keeper Kainoa Likewise was tested with five first-half shots on goal, making four saves, while the Falcon defense faced 10 shots in the opening 45 minutes. Air Force fired off three shots, none on frame, in the opening half.
The Highlanders connected on their second strike in the 62nd minute as Hugo Magana notched the goal via Jose Ponce's assist.
Freshman midfielder Quinn Matulis gave the Falcons a jolt of energy as he punched in his first collegiate goal on his third career shot attempt in the 82nd minute. A lively Falcon offense continued to push the pace on the Highlanders in search of the equalizer but came up short by the final whistle.
Matulis led the Falcons with a pair of shots while teammates Nick Blessing, Julian Flores and Tristan Trager tallied a shot a piece. Likewise registered a career-high six saves on 19 shots faced.
Next up, Air Force hosts its first home game of the 2019 campaign as Nebraska-Omaha comes to the Academy. The Falcons and Omaha will kick off at 6 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 21, for Air Force's only match the week.
