Air Force men's soccer plays at home for the first time this season, Saturday evening, at 6 pm
THIS WEEKEND: Air Force hosts its first home game of the 2019 campaign as Nebraska-Omaha (0-4-2) comes to the Academy. The Falcons and Mavericks will kick off at 6 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 21, for Air Force's only match the week.
THE SERIES: The Falcons and Mavericks will be meeting for the second time in program history, with the Mavs winning the first meeting, 1-0, in Omaha.
LAST TIME THEY PLAYED: Omaha punched in a late goal in front of a home crowd of 650 fans, snapping Air Force's four-match win streak, September 23, 2016.
In the first period of play, stubborn defense on both sides of the pitch limited the scoring opportunities for both teams. Air Force goalkeeper John Wendt did not face a shot from Omaha in the first half while the Falcons tested Omaha goalkeeper, Joseph Ghitis, with three shots on goal. Air Force outshot Omaha, 6-4, in the first 45 minutes.
The defensive clinic continued deep into the second half as the match remained scoreless at the 85th minute. The Mavs found a shot opportunity in the 86th minute as Emmanuel Hamzat sprinted ahead of the Falcon defenders in the box and put the ball in the lower right corner.
Air Force responded with some offensive pressure of their own but was unable find the back of the Omaha goal before the end of regulation.
UP NEXT: The Falcons open the Western Athletic Conference slate hosting Kansas City at 1 PM MT, Saturday (Sept. 28), at Cadet Soccer Stadium. The meeting will be Air Force's only match of the weekend.
LAST WEEKEND: The Falcons had a tough weekend in California, dropping a pair of matches to #23 Cal State Fullerton (3-2 OT) and UC Riverside (2-1) on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
