Women's Soccer Defeats Seattle, 3-2

Both offenses were on fire in the contest, as they combined for 39 shots, with AF getting the slight advantage, 22-17. Both teams were dead even in time of possession, while the Redhawks (4-4-1) had a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Freshman Lexi Romero led the offense once again, as she had two goals to up her season total to a team-leading six. Junior Emma Nelson had her first goal of the season, which was the go-ahead goal, in the 80th minute on a rocket from outside the box. Assisting on the goals were junior Jillian Jamero, senior Alex Giggie, sophomore Bella Colandrea, and freshman Emiley Benner. AF now has 18 assists on its 16 goals this season.
On defense, junior Danielle Katz made five saves while facing the 19 shots in her fifth win of the season. The defense also came up huge, as a pair of team saves were made as well when there was an empty net on a free ball.
Air Force came out firing on all cylinders, as Romero took a through ball from Jamero in the fifth minute and buried it for her fifth goal of the season. Seattle had the response in the 22nd minute to knot the contest up at 1-1 midway through. The rest of the way, both teams were almost even on shots, but none of them found the net to keep it tied into the half.
In the second half, both sides picked up the pace, as they looked for a go ahead goal. The go-ahead goal was scored in the 80th minute, as on a set piece, Giggie passed it off to Nelson well outside the box. Nelson then dribbled around a defender and let it fly, burying it in the upper right corner for her first goal of the season, making it 2-1.
Not satisfied with the one goal lead, AF got some insurance in the 84th minute as a scramble in the box had the ball go from Colandrea, to Benner, and eventually to Romero, who scooted the ball between a defenders legs and into the net for her second goal of the night.
With the clock winding down, SU got a corner kick with about 15 seconds to play. They were able to capitalize on it, scoring with 10 seconds to play, making it 3-2. It was already way too little too late, however, and AF held on for the win.
With non-conference play in the rearview mirror, AF will not turn its attention to the Mountain West Conference season. It kicks off next weekend with a quick trip to California to face Fresno State, Friday, Sept. 27. Kickoff against the Bulldogs is set for 8 p.m. MT.
