Last Time Out
Air Force wrapped up non-conference play with a 3-2 win over Seattle. The match was tied, 1-1, going into the final 10 minutes, before AF scored two goals to lead, 3-1. SU got one in the 90th minute, but AF held on. Freshman Lexi Romero scored two goals, including the game winner. Junior Emma Nelson had the go-ahead goal in the 80th minute. Both offenses were on fire in the contest, as they combined for 39 shots, with AF getting the slight advantage, 22-17. On defense, junior Danielle Katz made five saves while facing the 19 shots in her fifth win of the season. The defense also came up huge, as a pair of team saves were made as well when there was an empty net on a free ball.
Best Seven-Game Start In Program History
By starting the season 5-1-1, the Falcons are off to their best seven-game start in program history, which began in 1992. Since going Division-I in 1996, Air Force's program record for wins is 11, set back in 1999. That team also set the program standard for win percentage with an 11-10 (.524) record. That was despite starting the season with an 0-4 mark.
Sharing is Caring
On Air Force's 16 goals this season, there have been a total of 18 assists. Freshmen Emiley Benner leads the team with four. The 18 assists ranks first in the conference and 38th in the nation, while the 2.57 assists per game also ranks first in the MW and is 16th in the NCAA.
Freshman Sensation
Freshman Lexi Romero could not have asked for a much better start to her career, as the forward leads the team with six goals and 15 points. The six goals and 15 points rank second in the conference, second only to reigning MW POTY Raimee Sherle, who has seven and 18, respectively. In addition, her .86 goals per game and 2.14 points per game both rank tops in the conference. She is also in the top-40 nationally in all four categories.
21st Season in the Mountain West
2019 marks Air Force's 21st season as a member of the Mountain West Conference after being one of its charter members back in 1999. In 20 seasons, Air Force holds a 58-137-19 mark in conference matches. In MW conference openers, the Falcons are 4-13-3.
Opponent Connections
Air Force has six players from California, tied for the most players from one state on the team. With the California connection, AF players have some familarity with players from the opposing squads. The Bulldogs have three players from Livermore, the same hometown as freshman Lexi Romero. Bulldog senior midifielder Tori Nicolo was a teammate of Romero's at Livermore HS, while redshirt junior defender Megan Amick and senior midfielder Melissa Ellis attended Granada HS.
