FRESNO, Calif. – The Air Force Academy women's soccer team took the 2019 Mountain West Conference opener by defeating Fresno State, 1-0, Friday evening, Sept. 27, at the FS Soccer and Lacrosse Stadium. The Falcons move to 6-1-1 and win their first conference opener since 2015.
With the win, the Falcons also defeated Fresno State on the road for the first time in program history in the last five tries. It also broke a four game unbeaten streak by Fresno against AF.
The game-winning goal came off the golden boot of freshman Lexi Romero on a penalty kick. It was Romero's team-leading seventh goal of the season. On defense, junior keeper Danielle Katz earned her fifth shutout of the season by making three saves, while facing 10 shots.
The first half was mostly a defensive struggle, as AF out-shot FS, 4-3, with just one shot apiece on net. Both keepers made their respective saves, however, keeping it a 0-0 game after the first 45.
The second half started off with much of the same, but the tide turned in the 58th minute as Fresno State's goalie was carded with a yellow in the box, setting up a penalty kick. Romero buried the opportunity in the right corner, making it 1-0 with 30 minutes to play.
From there, Air Force faced a barrage from the FS offense, but Katz was able to turn away any shots, keeping the shutout intact, and sealing the 1-0 win.
Air Force now returns home on Sunday, Sept. 29, to face San Jose State in game two of conference action. Kickoff against the Spartans at Cadet Soccer Stadium is set for noon.
