Lexi Romero scored her eighth goal of the season
Air Force out-shot the Spartans, 15-5, including 8-1 in the first half. Seven of those shots were on net. AF was also in the offensive zone all day, getting 10 corners to the Spartans' three. The goal came off the foot of freshman Lexi Romero, her team-leading eighth of the season. She was assisted by classmate Faith Lee, her second on the year.
In the first half, it was all Air Force, as the Falcons held the 8-1 shot advantage, as well as a 57-43 percent possession advantage. Air Force's goal came in the 14th minute, as a perfect flick pass from Lee found Romero in the box, and she buried it home to make it 1-0 early. That score held into the locker-room and halftime.
The second half was a bit of a different story, however it didn't look that way at first. AF got a golden opportunity in the 55th minute to add to their lead, as junior Emma Nelson was fouled in the box, setting up Romero for the penalty kick. The frosh let it rip on the right side, but the SJSU keeper made the crucial save, keeping it 1-0. The Spartans capitalized on the opportunity, netting the equalizer in the 68th minute.
They were not done, however, as they kept pushing the pace, and got the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute. The rest of the way, AF could not get a shot off, sealing the tough, 2-1, defeat.
Air Force will be back in action next Friday, Oct. 4, when it hosts Wyoming in a Mountain West Conference rivalry game. Kickoff from Cadet Soccer Stadium is set for 6 p.m. MT.
