Air Force men's soccer was unable to find the back of the goal in the Sunday afternoon matchup
Air Force, who returned only one starter from last year's record-setting season, struggled to control the offensive possessions early on. The seasoned UC Davis squad ceased the opportunity and pushed the pace on the young Falcon lineup.
The Aggies tallied the first strike in the 25th minute as Marte Formico received a long pass from up field and capitalized on the one-on-one with Air Force keeper Kainoa Likewise. In the opening 45 minutes, Air Force was only able to fire off three shots, one on frame, while the Aggies took 10 shots, three of which were on goal.
Air Force found an offensive burst in the second half, taking three shots in three minutes. Sophomore midfielder Michael Neacsu took an attempt at the equalizer in the 47th minute but was denied by the UC Davis keeper. Moments after, Lathan Spadafora got all of his leg behind the ball but was just off target as the ball sailed wide. Luke Hill continued the pressure with a shot in the 52nd minute, also denied by the Aggies' keeper.
UC Davis fended off the Air Force onslaught and regained control of the match as Whalen Shinn notched the Aggies' second goal in the 70th minute with extra attempts coming off a free kick.
The Falcons stayed in the fight but were unable to battle back by the final whistle.
In 90 minutes of action, Air Force took eight shots, four on goal, while UC Davis recorded 24 shots. Neacsu and Spadafora led the Falcons with two shots apiece.
Next up, the Falcons will take on Cal State Fullerton, Friday (Sept. 13) at 7 PM PT, in Fullerton, California, followed up with a Sunday contest (Sept. 15) against UC Riverside at 11 AM PT.
