Air Force women's tennis earned a 6-1 win at Colorado Saturday afternoon at the South Campus Tennis Courts. It was the first-ever win in Boulder for the Falcons (1-1), who have also won two in a row over the Buffs for the first time ever as well. In addition, it was head coach Kim Gidley's 300th career win at Air Force.
The Falcons opened by getting the doubles point with a pair of 6-2 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Meredith Jones and Kristin Kerrigan downed Balzert/Farrow 6-2 at No. 2 and TJ Fumagalli and Nadeen Lieberman defeated #31 Malinen/Nayar 6-2 at No. 1 for the point.
The Falcons picked up the first singles point with a win at No. 3 by Lieberman over Mara Campos 6-2, 6-2. The Falcons picked up point three at No. 5 with Sydney Fitch defeating Megan Forster 6-2, 7-6. The Falcons got the win as team captain TJ Fumagalli won at No. 1 over Monica Malinen 6-4, 6-4.
The Falcons also got wins at No. 6 and No. 2 singles. Courtney Swift won at No. 6 over Tallulah Farrow 7-6, 1-6, 6-3. Jones then won at No. 2 over Antonia Balzert 7-6, 1-6, 6-4.
"This was a great team effort today," head coach Kim Gidley said. "We changed some doubles combinations from last week and it worked well. The energy in doubles was huge and it set the tone for singles. Our biggest focus for this match was our energy and how we could compete for points. In singles, the team won 5 of 6 first sets, battling all the way. The overall team fight and combing back from when we were behind was incredible. MJ saved three sets and to win the first set (11-9) in the tie-breaker for the first set, in addition to Sydney saving three sets in the second set to win 8-6 in the tie-breaker. It was cool that everyone won a match and it was a great team effort!"
"It was also great that our two seniors--Nadeen winning the first singles match for the team and TJ clinching the overall team match with her singles win."
Air Force returns to action tomorrow, Jan. 26, with a home-opening doubleheader. The Falcons take on Northern Colorado at 2 pm and Metro State at 5:30 pm.
