The junior clocked a time of 4:48.73a to win the seeded section by more than a second.
BOULDER, Colo. – With the second-fastest mile in Academy history, Air Force junior Mahala Norris claimed first-place honors this evening (Jan. 31), as a small contingent of the track and field team wrapped up the opening day of action at the Colorado Invitational in Boulder.
The junior, who posted a raw time of 4:56.03 to win the seeded section of the mile by more than a second, vaulted up to second on the Academy's all-time standings when that time was converted for altitude to 4:48.73. That time – the second-fastest in the Mountain West this season – was a personal improvement of nearly five seconds.
On the men's side, classmate Scott Johnson posted a season-best time of 4:13.88 (4:07.62 adjusted for altitude) to finish sixth.
The seeded section of the mile was the only track event contested at Colorado's Indoor Practice Facility on Friday, as the majority of the field events were contested. Senior Anthony Davis paced the small group of Falcons, as he earned runner-up honors in the triple jump (42'5½"). Freshman Jaret Prete posted a career-best distance of 53'8¼" to finish sixth out of 14 competitors in the men's weight throw, while juniors Meghan Carbiener and Addyson Smith finished seventh (50'4¾") and 10th (season debut, 49'5"), respectively, in the women's event.
Air Force returns to Boulder tomorrow for the final day of action at the Colorado Invitational. Action is slated to begin at 11:00 a.m. (MT), with the shot put and first running event.
