AF scored 37 unanswered points to run away with the victory
In addition to the 35-7 win over Navy at Falcon Stadium in 2018, AF has now outscored their Service Academy rival 75-14 in the last two contests played at USAFA. It was also the fourth-straight home win for the Falcons over the Midshipmen, and extended AF's lead in the all-time series to 31-22.
The Falcons dominated on both sides of the ball, out-gaining Navy by a 410-241 tally, including a 369-90 margin on the ground. The Falcons racked up 25 first downs to Navy's 10. The Falcons also capitalized in the red zone, going a perfect 6-for-6 while Navy was 0-1.
Leading the offensive charge was the rushing trio of junior Timothy Jackson, sophomore Brad Roberts, and sophomore Haaziq Daniels, who was making his first career start at quarterback. Jackson finished with 118 yards on 19 carries, marking the fifth 100-plus yard-rushing day in his career. Roberts, in his first career AF game, totaled 103 yards on 10 carries, while Daniels added 96 yards on 10 touches. Roberts and Daniels also scored rushing touchdowns, the first of their respective careers.
The other rushing TDs came on the legs of junior Warren Bryan and senior Matthew Murla, also both the first of their careers. In the passing game, Daniels only needed to complete four passes as the rushing attack took care of the rest. He finished with 41 yards on completions to senior Daniel Morris, who had three for 29, and sophomore Kyle Patterson, who tallied his first career catch for 12 yards.
Another hero on offense was junior kicker Tevye Schuettpelz-Rohl, who hit all four of his field goal attempts, as well as all four of his extra points. The four field goals were the first four of his AF career, and tied a program record for field goals in a single game.
Not to be outdone, the defense tallied three sacks and four tackles for loss, as well as adding an interception and fumble recovery. They also stood tall when they needed to, as they forced two turnovers on downs.
Leading the way were freshman Alec Mock and senior George Silvanic, who both totaled seven tackles, along with a sack for Mock and 1.5 sacks from Silvanic. Recording the interception was junior Corvan Taylor, the first of his career, while the fumble was picked up by senior Parker Noren.
Navy started the game with the ball, and quickly got into AF territory on a long pass. With the ball on the Falcon 46, Navy's offense stalled out, and an incomplete pass on fourth and three caused the turnover on downs.
The offense then went to work, led by Daniels in his first career start. The sophomore looked sharp, recording a 21-yard rush to get to the Navy 31 yard line. After two short rushes and a false start, an incomplete pass led to a 48-yard field goal attempt. Schuettpelz-Rohl split the uprights on the first field goal attempt of his AF career to get the Falcons the early 3-0 lead.
From there, both defenses held steady, as both teams had two three-and-outs, to run the clock out on the first quarter with the 3-0 tally. On the first play from scrimmage of the second quarter, Navy found a gap in the secondary for a 73-yard TD pass to get the Midshipmen the lead, 7-3.
Facing its first deficit, the Falcon offense went back to work. Daniels got the drive jump-started with another long rush, this time for 32 yards to get to the Navy 28. Two rushes later, AF entered the red zone for the first time. After a 13-yard scamper from Jackson that was stopped mere inches from the end zone, Daniels finished off the eight-play, 75-yard drive with a one-yard QB sneak to give AF the lead back, 10-7.
On Navy's ensuing drive, on an option play, the QB dropped the ball without contact, and Noren was there to jump on the pigskin to give AF prime field position at the Navy 30. Despite the great opportunity, Navy's defense held strong to force a field goal. Schuettpelz-Rohl was true once again, this time from 35 yards, to extend the lead to 13-7 with about six and a half minutes to the half.
After yet another three-and-out forced by the Falcon defense, AF took over on their own 19 with four and a half to the end of the first half. A handful of rushes got the offense to the AF 44, when Daniels began to showcase his arm. His first career completion was for 12 yards to Patterson, followed by another 12-yard strike to Morris to get AF to the 32.
Another pass to Morris, this one for 10 yards, got the Falcons to the 22, but the drive then stalled at the 15 to set up another FG attempt. Schuettpelz-Rohl hit it yet again, this one from 32 yards out, to get the Air Force lead to 16-7 into the half.
Starting the second half with possession, the offense picked up right where it left off with two long rushes from Jackson to get into Navy territory, as well as put him over the 100-yard mark for the game.
Setting up with first and 10 from the 29, Navy held firm once again, setting up a 40-yard attempt for Schuettpelz-Rohl. Like the previous three, he hit it right down the middle to extend the advantage to 19-7 early in the third. After a few drives from both sides with some positive momentum, but no scoring, the score held with Air Force up 12 into the fourth quarter.
Starting the last stanza with the ball, AF got rushes of 24 and 29 from Roberts to get the ball deep into Navy territory. After rushes from Roberts and Daniels to get the ball to the two, Murla knifed his way through defenders to score his first career touchdown and put AF up 26-7 with about 12 minutes to play.
The AF defense continued to be unrelenting on Navy's next drive, as they forced a quick four-and-out, only allowing four yards, to get the offense the ball back on the Midshipmen 29. Just four plays later, all rushes from Roberts, the sophomore plunged in from two yards out to make it a 33-7 game with just over nine minutes to go. The rushes on the drive also gave him over 100 yards on the day.
Navy then looked like they would break the scoring drought, as they drove to the AF 13, before a pick in the end zone from Taylor, which he ran back to Navy's 38, kept the Midshipmen off the board. The Falcons then just needed five more plays for Bryan to find pay dirt to put a cherry on top of the scoreboard at 40-7. Navy then just ran out the clock to give AF the 33-point victory.
The Falcons will now have a few weeks away from competition before returning for the start of Mountain West Conference play against San Jose State, Saturday, Oct. 24. The contest at SJSU still has a TBA start time.
