The Falcons out-gained the Broncos, 484-459
The Falcons gained 415 yards on the ground, to set a new season-high. Leading the ground game was junior Brandon Lewis, who had the first 100-plus yard game of his career, finishing with a new career-best 112 yards on 10 carries, to go along with a touchdown.
Senior Matthew Murla added two scores on the ground, the first multi-touchdown game of his career, while sophomore Elijah Robinson was the second-leading rusher in his first time toting the rock. He tallied 90 yards on 10 carries. Junior quarterback Warren Bryan had a career-best day on the ground as well, as he went for 87 yards on 19 carries.
In the passing game, sophomore Kyle Patterson was the leading receiver, nabbing three receptions for 38 yards. It was his second-straight three-reception game. Senior Rhett Harms also got in on the passing game, as he had his first career catch for a gain of 31. On defense, senior Elisha Palm was the leading tackler, finishing with eight stops, seven solo.
In addition to finishing with the lead in total yards, AF controlled the time of possession by a 37:31-22:29 margin. The Falcons also had more first downs, 28-23, and converted in the red zone five out of six times.
Boise received the opening kick, and wasted no time in getting on the board. On the first play from scrimmage, a pass deep down the middle resulted in a 75-yard TD strike to make it 7-0 Boise with just 10 seconds taken off the clock.
Air Force was able to respond right away, as the Falcons drove 75-yards in nine plays, all rushes. Lewis was the bell cow on the drive, rushing for 56 of the yards on four carries, including the seven-yard TD rush to cap off the drive. It was the first score of his career, and tied the game at 7-7 with nine and a half minutes left in the first quarter.
After holding BSU to just 18 yards on their next drive, AF took over on their own 13. Two rushes for a first down got things started before Robinson scooted 50 yards on his first career carry to get to the Boise 21. Three plays later, Murla capped off the six-play drive with a one-yard TD plunge to give AF its first lead, 14-7, with 3:23 left in the first.
Boise re-tied the score on their next drive, which spanned into the second quarter. After 10-plays and 78 yards, which chewed up over five minutes of game clock, BSU scored from four yards out to knot it at 14 early in the second stanza.
On their first drive of the second, the Falcons continued to move the ball downfield consistently with the rushing attack. Bryan converted two straight third and shorts to make it first and 10 from the Boise 48. Then AF went to the air for the first time, as Bryan connected with Patterson for a 19-yard gain. A personal foul on the play put AF at the 14. From there, the drive stalled, and AF settled for a field goal. Junior Tevye Schuettpelz-Rohl was true from 31-yards out to get AF back ahead, 17-14, with 6:53 to the half.
The Broncos responded right away on their ensuing drive, going 64 yards over nine plays to score from one yard out and re-gain the lead, 21-17, with two and a half minutes left in the second quarter. Air Force was then forced into its first three-and-out of the game, giving BSU the ball back with 1:22 left on the clock. The Broncos were able to drive 63 yards in just 35 seconds to extend the lead to 28-17 going into the half.
Both teams traded punts to start the second half, before AF went on a 13-play drive that used almost seven minutes of game clock. That drive ended with a 39-yard field goal attempt, which sailed wide right, to keep the Falcons trailing by 11 with four minutes left in the third. The Broncos turned the miss into seven more on their next drive, scoring on a 26-yard TD pass to cap a six-play, 78-yard drive and open up a 35-17 advantage heading into the fourth.
In a drive that started in the third, and extended into the fourth, AF went 75-yards in 12 plays, all rushes, to get back on the scoreboard. Murla's second rushing TD of the game capped off the drive, this one coming from seven yards out, to tighten the tally to 35-24 with 11:24 to play. The 11-point deficit was short lived, however, as on the ensuing kickoff, the Broncos took it to the house rom 88 yards out to get their lead back to 18, 42-24.
AF was held three-and-out on its next drive, and Boise kept the offense rolling after that. A 47-yard passing strike aided a quick score in just two and a half minutes to make it a 49-24 game with just under seven and a half to play.
The Falcon offense didn't give up though, as on the next drive, freshman quarterback Ben Brittain led a 10-play, 75-yard scoring drive. It was capped off by a five-yard rushing score by junior Bo Gross, the first of his AF career, to make it a 49-30 game after a failed two-point conversion. From there, Boise ran out the clock to seal the game.
The Falcons return to the field Saturday, Nov. 7, for the second leg of the Commander-In-Chief's Trophy at Army West Point. Kickoff from Michie Stadium is set for 11:30 a.m. ET.
