Furious Falcon rally falls short in 4-2 loss
12/5/2020 8:25:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Robert Morris' Jordan Timmons scored three goals in the first 9:21 of the game and then the Colonials held off a furious Air Force rally for a 4-2 win, Saturday, Dec. 5, at the Cadet Ice Arena.
Timmons opened the scoring just 25 seconds into the game as he tipped in a point shot by Brian Kramer. Just over three minutes into the game, a penalty was called on the Falcons and RMU (5-2 overall, 3-1 AHA) took advantage. On the rush, Aidan Spellacy's shot was saved, but Timmons put back the rebound at 4:43. After another penalty on Air Force, the Colonials took a 3-0 lead as Timmons completed the hat trick. A shot by Brendan Michaelian went off the post and Timmons put back the rebound at 9:21. After the goal, Zach LaRocque replaced Alex Schilling in the Air Force net.
After several LaRocque saves, the Falcons came to life and got on the board late in the first period. Freshman Thomas Daskas made a pass from behind the net and defenseman Jake Levin netted his first of the season from the bottom of the right circle at 16:58.
Air Force (0-4 overall, 0-4 AHA) continued to battle and cut deeper into the Colonial lead in the final minute of the second. Some nifty passing between Alex Mehnert and Bennett Norlin led to some open net for Daskas in the right circle. The freshman from Rochester, Mich., lifted the puck over the diving Colonial goalie for his first career goal at 19:07 of the second.
The Falcons outshot the Colonials, 10-8, in the third period and had several quality chances, but could not find the equalizer. Late in the period, RMU netted its third power-play goal of the game. Kramer's shot from the center point was blocked by Brandon Koch, but the carom went right to Justin Addamo in the right circle who scored his fourth of the season with 6:38 remaining. Air Force pulled the goalie in the final 1:45, but was unable to score.
"Robert Morris came out so strong and so confident," head coach Frank Serratore said. "When it was 3-0, we brought in Zach LaRocque and he helped change the momentum. It is hard to turn a game, especially since we had absolutely nothing going at all. Then Levin's goal at the end of the period was big for us. I'm proud of our guys for persevering. They could have packed it in, but they didn't. They showed a lot of character and substance."
RMU outshot Air Force, 33-23, in the game. RMU was 3-for-5 on the power play while AF was 0-for-1. Noah West made 21 saves for the Falcons. Schilling played the first 9:21 of the game and made five saves. LaRocque played the final 49 minutes and stopped 24 of the 25 shots he faced.
Air Force returns to the ice with an exhibition series on Saturday-Sunday, Dec. 12-13, against the National Team Development Program. The game times are 5:05 pm MT each night at the Cadet Ice Arena.
