Women’s Tennis Falls to Nebraska

Air Force women's tennis fell to Nebraska 4-3 in a non-conference dual Saturday morning at the Dillon Tennis Center at the University of Nebraska campus in Lincoln, Neb. The Falcons dropped to 4-2 on the season, snapping a four match win streak.

The Falcons were unable to hold off the Huskers, who rallied back from a 3-2 Air Force lead by winning the final two singles matches.

Air Force opened by taking the doubles point, winning two of three doubles matches. Meredith Jones and Kristin Kerrigan won at No. 2 over Haakenstad/Kuckelman 6-4 for the first win. TJ Fumagalli and Nadeen Lieberman won at No. 1 over Novak/Reifeis 6-2 to clinch the doubles point. Alex Kuo and Courtney Swift fell at No. 3 to Aragon/Kuckelman 6-3.

In singles, the Falcons went 2-4.

Nebraska opened with wins at No. 4 and No. 2 to take a 2-1 lead. Abby Warner dropped the No. 4 match to Jessica Aragon 6-0, 6-0 and Jones fell at No. 2 to Kristina Novak 6-1, 6-3.

The Falcons rallied back with wins at No. 1 and No. 6 to re-take a 3-2 lead. Fumagalli won at No. 1 over Claire Reifeis 6-2, 6-3 and Sydney Fitch won at No. 6 over Anna Baranovski 6-3, 6-2.

Nebraska came back to take the match with wins at No. 5 and No. 3. Ellie Kuckelman defeated Kerrigan at No. 5, 6-1, 6-4 and Lieberman dropped the No. 3 match to Chole Kuckelman 6-2, 6-4.

"For the second year in a row, the team won the doubles point against Nebraska," head coach Kim Gidley said. "I was really pleased with how the team competed in the doubles. With some new combinations, it was nice to come away with the point. TJ finished out her career competing against Nebraska by winning all three years at No. 1 doubles and never lost as set in singles at No. 1 the previous two years and No. 2 her freshmen year."

"The match came down to the very last match on the court and we were not able to finish them off," Gidley said. "The fight was good and I am pleased with the progress the team is making from week to week."

Air Force returns to action Thursday, Feb. 13 at Texas, followed by weekend matches, Feb. 15-16, in Tallahasse, Fla., against Florida State and Florida A&M.
