AMES, Iowa – Junior Mahala Norris crushed the Academy's record in the mile this afternoon (Feb. 15), as four members of the Air Force track and field team wrapped up a stellar day of competition at the Iowa State Classic in Ames. Norris was one of three Falcons to impact the program's record book today at the Lied Recreation Center.
Norris became the first Falcon to break an Academy standard this season, as she clocked a career-best time of 4:41.65 to shatter the previous record that had stood since 2017. The time, which also broke the program's three-year-old Junior Class Record, was third in a stacked field of 54 total runners.
The men posted a pair of Class Records this afternoon, while freshman Sam Gilman debuted in 10th on the program's all-time standings in the mile. Gilman, who broke his own Class Record, posted a time of 4:04.96 to win his section and finish 14th in the full 61-runner field. Michael Rhoads shattered the program's 36-year-old Senior Class Record in the 800-meter run, as he clocked a time of 1:47.65 – a mark just shy of his own Academy Record – to finish second in the 53-runner event.
The Falcons return to the Academy next Friday (Feb. 21) to host the Air Force Collegiate Open – a final tune-up before the Mountain West Indoor Championships.
