Air Force women's tennis fell to #4 Florida State 7-0 in a non-conference dual Saturday morning at the fifth Scott Speicher military appreciation match at the Speicher Memorial Tennis Center in Tallahassee, Fla.. The Falcons dropped to 4-4 on the season.
The Falcons dropped the doubles point, going 1-2 in doubles. At No. 1 doubles, Air Force's #50th-ranked duo of TJ Fumagalli and Nadeen Lieberman defeated #15 Petra Hule and Victoria Allen 7-6 (7-4). With the doubles win, Fumagalli became Air Force's all-time leader in career doubles wins with 108.
The Falcons dropped the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches. Meredith Jones and Kristin Kerrigan fell at No. 2 to Nandini Das and Andrea Garcia 6-3. Alex Kuo and Courtney Swift fell at No. 3 to Emmanuelle Salas and Alice Amendola 6-2.
Air Force was swept in singles play. Fumagalli fell to Salas at No. 1, 6-2, 6-6 (7-5). Jones fell at No. 2 to Petro Hule, 6-0, 6-3. Lieberman fell at No. 3 to #86 Das 6-0, 7-5. Kerrigan fell at No. 4 to Victoria Allen 6-0, 6-2. Sydney Fitch fell at No. 5, Garcia 6-2, 6-2. Alex Kuo fell at No. 6, to Mira Stegmann 3-6, 6-3 (10-1).
"To play two top 10 teams on the road at their home court is tough to do," head coach Kim Gidley said. "This is the strongest schedule we've had in program history and we have to earn every win. It was especially cool for our senior duo of Fumagalli and Lieberman to win their doubles match. They saved a match point at 5-3 down and came back to win 7-4 in the tie-breaker with an ace by Nadeen. Those two just played an entire match and never quit."
"In singles, Alex won the only set for us," Gidley added. "In every match the team came back from the second set and made the match tighter. This team is getting better as a team every match and I am pleased with how they are competing every match. This schedule should only help us going into conference play."
Air Force returns to action tomorrow, in Tallahassee, Fla., against Florida A&M.
