AF got an impressive 11 strikeouts from freshman pitcher Jason Shuger
DURHAM, N.C. – The Air Force Academy baseball team dropped a road game to No. 14 Duke, 16-0, Monday afternoon, Feb. 24, at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
The Falcons got a workmanlike performance from freshman pitcher Jason Shuger, who went the final 5.2 innings, allowing just three hits and two earned runs, while striking out an impressive 11 batters. Over his first 9.1 college innings, Shuger has 14 Ks and a 2.89 ERA.
Offensively, AF tallied four hits, including doubles from sophomores Gabriel Garcia and Cayden Zimmerman.
Duke was all over AF to start the game, plating three runs in the first inning and then nine in the second to take a 12-0 lead early on. They added one run tallies in the third, fourth, fifth, and eighth to conclude the scoring. AF got the bases loaded with no outs in the ninth, but a fly out, strikeout and ground out maintained the shutout.
Air Force will be back in action this Friday-Sunday, Feb. 28-March 1, for the Armed Forces Invitational in Fayetteville, N.C. The Falcons will face Army West Point and Campbell twice each over the three days of action at Segra Stadium, the home of the Houston Astros High-A affiliate, the Fayetteville Woodpeckers.
