Air Force Rallies To 60-58 Win Over New Mexico In Home-Finale

Back-to-back three's by Tomes rallies Falcons to win.
USAFA, Colo. - Air Force men's basketball (11-18, 5-12 MW) rallied back to a 60-58 win over New Mexico in Mountain West action Wednesday night at Clune Arena. A pair of three-point baskets by senior Sid Tomes brought the Falcons back for the win in the home-finale.
Trailing 58-54, Tomes made it a one-point game with a three at the 1:08 mark. Following a pair of missed free throws by New Mexico (17-13, 6-11 MW), Tomes was able to get the rebound with 38 seconds to play. Seconds later, Tomes drilled the game-winner with 27 seconds left to play to put the Falcons ahead 60-58. New Mexico missed on its last two shot attempts as the clock expired, sending the Falcons spilling onto the court to celebrate.
Playing in their final home game, the senior class accounted for 57 of 60 points for Air Force. The four senior starters of Lavelle Scottie, Ryan Swan, Caleb Morris and Tomes all reached double figures in scoring.
Scottie scored a team-high 16 points, adding nine rebounds and four assists. Swan notched his third double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Six of his boards were on the offensive end.
Morris added 11 points, including a 3 of 5 night from three-point range. Tomes had his first-career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The final senior, LeSean Brown, added a season-high six points off the bench.
Jaquan Lyle led New Mexico with 18 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Vance Jackson added 16 points and six rebounds.
Air Force trailed New Mexico 33-28 at the half after leading by as many as 13 early. A 15-0 run early had the Falcons up 20-7 12 minutes into the game. The Lobos out-scored the Falcons 25-8 the rest of the half to take the five point lead.
Air Force clawed its way back into the game in the second half, re-taking the lead at 37-35 on a Tomes three with 13:48 to play. New Mexico re-took the lead and led by as many as six at 58-52 with 4:49 to play. The Lobos did not score again, as the Falcons rallied back.
Air Force returns to action Saturday, Feb. 29, at Colorado State. The game tips at 2 pm MT and will be broadcast by ESPN3.
