Air Force women’s basketball finalizes the 2019-20 campaign at 10-21, 7-11 MW
LAS VEGAS - The seventh-seeded Air Force Falcons fell to second-seeded Boise State, 73-50, in the 2020 Air Force Reserves Mountain West Basketball Championship quarterfinals, Monday evening in the Thomas & Mack Center on the campus of UNLV. The Falcons finalize the 2019-2020 campaign at 10-21 overall, marking head coach Chris Gobrecht's most single-season wins since taking the helm in 2015-16. Air Force's seven Mountain West wins marks a program-high in MW league play.
In her second tournament quarterfinals appearance in three seasons, Kaelin Immel led the Falcons in scoring with 15 points, shooting 50-percent from the floor while also dishing out four assists. She rounded out her stat line with five rebounds and a game-high three steals.
Immel's 15 points propelled her to 473 points on the season, setting a new Air Force Division I record for most single-season points, smashing the record she previously set in the quarterfinals matchup with Boise State two years ago (464, 2017-18). Immel also set the Academy's Division I record for single-season field goals made, knocking down 177 on the season, outdoing her previous record of 163 made in her freshman season. Immel's 1,321 career points is the second-most in the Division I era, second only to Raimee Beck's 1,386 (2007-11).
Sophomore forward Riley Snyder dropped 14 points on the night coupled with a rebound, a block and an assist. Snyder amassed 441 points on the season, ranking third in single-season points in the Division I era behind Immel's marks. Her 163 field goals this season ties Immel's second-place mark.
Sophomore forward Haley Jones crashed the boards for the second-straight night, picking up a game-high 12 rebounds to tie her career-high rebounding mark. Her rebounding effort helped the Falcons out-rebound the Broncos, 39-36. She also dished out three assists on the night.
Junior teammate Emily Conroe snagged four rebounds and two steals. Conroe finished the season with 234 rebounds, a mark that ranks her third in Division I single-season rebounds, behind former teammate Dee Bennett (238, 2016-17). Conroe's 58 steals this season ties her with former teammate Cortney Porter for fourth-most in a single-season in the Division I era.
Freshmen Nikki McDonald and Allyah Marlett found ways to contribute with McDonald tacking on six points shooting two-for-two from three-point land and Marlett leading the bench with four points scored at the free throw line. The Falcons' sophomore assists leader, Briana Autrey-Thompson, passed out three assists and snagged two rebounds.
The Broncos had five players in the double-figures, led by A'Shanti Coleman's 23 points, shooting 67-percent on the night (10-15). Jayde Christopher and Braydey Hodgins scored 14 apiece and Christopher notched a double-double with 10 assists. Riley Lupfer put up 11 points with a game-high three three-pointers.
Boise State put the Falcons on their heels early, draining six-of-seven attempts from the floor, including a three-ball, to build a 14-5 lead at the media timeout (6:14). The Falcons were poised to rally behind a Riley Snyder three-ball and two missed Boise State possessions but were unable to take care of the ball in order to do so. The Broncos were scoreless for nearly five minutes, allowing Air Force to get within four points, 14-10, before Boise State drained two free throws to extend to 16-10 with a minute remaining in the quarter. At the end of the first, Boise State went six minutes without a bucket and Air Force tracked them down to a two-point deficit at the free throw line, 16-14.
Boise State ended their scoring drought straight out of the break only to be matched with Nikki McDonald's second three-pointer. At the second quarter media timeout, Boise State led by six, 25-19, as Air Force struggled to hold on to the rock, turning the ball over five times by the timeout and for the 10th time on the game. Out of the media timeout, Boise State put some distance on Air Force with a 19-2 scoring run to close the half at 39-21. The Broncos shot 75-percent from the field (9-12) and 75-percent from down range (3-4) in the second quarter while the Falcons shot just 23-percent from the floor.
Immel looked to take charge in the second half, putting on a 6-2 scoring run out of the break. Her fourth bucket marked her 466th point on the season, setting a new Division I era single-season scoring record which she previously set in her freshman campaign (464 points). At the media timeout (3:38) Air Force was shooting 63-percent from the floor on the quarter but the Broncos managed to hold on to the 18-point lead. Air Force was shot 54-percent from the floor on the quarter but Boise State still managed to build 19-point lead shooting 43-percent from the field.
Despite the deficit, Air Force stayed competitive, scoring back-and-forth with the Broncos in the fourth quarter but was unable to string together a scoring run to close the distance. The absence of the Falcons' three-point shot allowed Boise State to maintain their cushion with the Falcons knocking down just two three-balls in 12 attempts in the second half. Another contributing factor to consider was Air Force's inability to take care of the ball, turning the rock over 22 times on the game while the Broncos lost the ball 13 times.
The Falcons will celebrate their historic season at the annual awards banquet this Spring.
