Mitch Lipe and Greg Skage earned individual honors, while both teams were also recognized.
NEW ORLEANS – Two Air Force pole vaulters – rising seniors Mitch Lipe and Greg Skage – earned All-Academic distinction by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association this morning (July 16) for their work in the classroom during the recent indoor season, while both the men's and women's teams also received academic recognition from the USTFCCCA.
All-Academic Athletes are determined by both academic and athletic achievement during the track and field season. To qualify during the shortened 2020 season, student-athletes must have compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher and been ranked within the top 96 of an individual indoor event on the official NCAA POP list.
Lipe, the MW Indoor champion who finished his junior campaign with a 3.71 GPA in aeronautical engineering, claimed his second-straight academic honor from the USTFCCCA, while Skage, the still-reigning MW Outdoor champion, captured his first citation after accumulating a 3.32 GPA in management. Backed by matching career-best clearances of 17'6½", the pair finished the indoor season tied for 22nd on the NCAA pole vault standings.
In addition, Air Force's men and women were two of the 463 NCAA Division I programs to be named an All-Academic Team by the USTFCCCA (199 men's teams, 264 women's teams), after producing cumulative grade-point-averages of 3.00 or higher based on the association's formula. The women completed the 2019-20 academic year with a combined 3.05 GPA, while the men accumulated a straight three-point average.
This marks the second-straight year that both teams have earned academic honors.
