Air Force Swept by Colorado State

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Air Force volleyball team dropped a 3-0 contest to Colorado State on Saturday (Oct. 16) afternoon in Fort Collins, falling in straight 25-14, 25-19, 25-15 sets to the host Rams.

Sophomore Joi Harvey led the team in kills (seven), blocks (two: one solo, one assisted) and hitting (.545) – with the latter leading all players with at least 10 attempts. Sophomores Caroline Reinkensmeyer and Madison Felker collected team-leading tallies in assists (13) and service aces (two), while junior BrookeLyn Messenger earned a season-high 12 digs to round out the Falcons' list of stat leaders.

The Falcons got on the board (1-1) with a kill from senior Bailey Keith, while scores from Harvey, Keith and Messenger evened the set at four. Colorado State scored the next six points to take a 10-4 advantage, before freshman Ella Tschuor stopped the run with a kill. The Rams pushed their lead to seven (12-5), before kills from Harvey, freshman Mac Russ, sophomore Aaryn Scires helped bring the Falcons within four (10-14). Air Force cut its deficit to three (13-16) following a block from Scires and Russ, but Colorado State responded with nine of the next 10 points for the 25-14 victory.

Harvey and Harvey put down set-tying kills to open the second set, while Felker registered an ace for the Falcons' first lead of the day (3-2). The Rams retook the lead, but Air Force stayed close behind kills from Tschuor (4-5), Russ (5-7) and three CSU errors (8-10). An ace from Messenger and a kill from Harvey kept the Falcons within two (11-13), while Felker (ace, 13-15), Keith (kill, 14-16), sophomore Savannah Neal (kill, 15-17), Russ (kill, 16-18) and Messenger (kill, 17-19) helped Air Force maintain that margin. The Rams pulled away in the final moments to take the set by a 25-19 margin.

A kill and block from Keith (Harvey assist), as well as a Reinkensmeyer ace, helped Air Force jump out to a quick 5-1 lead to open the third set. The Falcons doubled up the Rams at the 6-3 mark, but Colorado State scored eight-straight points to even the set and take a five-point lead (11-6). Keith stopped the run with a strike, while Neal and senior Abigail Collins helped Air Force to double digits (10-17). The Falcons earned kills from Messenger, Tschuor and junior Taleah Cooper, but CSU completed the sweep with 25-15 win.

Air Force returns to the Academy on Thursday (Oct. 21) to host Nevada at 6:00 p.m. (MT). It is part of a split week for the Falcons, who will also travel to California to face San Jose State on Saturday, Oct. 23.
