MARYLAND HIEGHTS, Mo. – Freshman Clayton Cosentino scored two goals as Air Force defeated Lindenwood, 6-1, in a college hockey exhibition game Saturday, Oct. 23, at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Mo.
Lindenwood took the early lead as Ryan Finnegan scored on a breakaway at 5:32 of the first period.
The Falcons answered with three goals in the second period, two coming on the power play. Cosentino tied the game at 4:06 with a slap shot from the center point on the power play. Mitchell Digby and Brandon Koch assisted. Air Force scored again on the power play as Nate Horn tipped in a point shot by Brandon Koch at 10:10. Drake Usher had the second assist for a 2-1 lead. Junior defenseman Dalton Weigel, playing on the wing due to injuries, scored on a 2-on-1 with a wrister from the left circle at 14:26. In the final three minutes, the Falcons killed 89 seconds of a Lion 5-on-3.
Junior Austin Park started the game in goal in place of Alex Schilling who is at his brother's wedding. However, Park had to leave the game due to injury with 7:20 left in the second period and sophomore Maiszon Balboa played the remainder of the game, his first collegiate action.
Midway through the third period, Koch and Digby drew penalties and the Falcons capitalized on the 5-on-3. Cosentino put back a shot by Koch at 10:14. Air Force took a 5-1 lead at 12:40 as Blake Bride chipped a puck into the zone and then ran it down with 7:20 left in the game. With 4:45 left, the Falcons scored their fourth power-play goal of the game. Parker Brown and Dalton Weigel sent the puck to the top of the crease and freshman Lucas Coon put it away for a 6-1 lead.
Air Force outshot Lindenwood, 43-26, in the game. Air Force was 4-for-6 on the power play and killed all seven of the Lions' power plays. Park made 14 saves for the Falcons while Balboa made 11 saves. Trent Burnham made 37 saves for the Lions.
"We did what we were supposed to do," said head coach Frank Serratore. "We obviously didn't want to fall behind, but we did take some momentum from that first period. We had to overcome some adversity with the injuries and some penalties we took. Our game was better tonight. We finished more checks and blocked some shots tonight. Our attention to detail and our five-on-five play can still be better."
Air Force and Lindenwood conclude the two-game series on Sunday, Oct. 24, at 4:10 pm CT in Maryland Heights, Mo.
