COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Four power play goals in the second period fueled Colorado College to an 8-1 win over Air Force in a non-conference game Saturday, Oct. 30, at Robson Arena in Colorado Springs. With the win, the teams split the two-game series and Colorado College retains the Pikes Peak Trophy.
The Tigers (2-4-2 overall) opened the scoring at 5:47 of the first period when Logan Will scored with a wrister on the rush from the right circle. With five minutes left in the first period, Tiger goalie Dominic Basse went out to play a puck behind the net. The puck caromed off the boards and right in front of the open net. Falcon forward Bennett Norlin nearly tied the game, but his shot hit the post as the Tigers had a 1-0 lead.
Colorado College took a 2-0 on the power play early in the second period. Hunter McKown scored from Matthew Gleason on the back door at 1:12. Air Force had two quality scoring chances shortly after the goal, but a shot by Blake Bride hit the post and then Ty Pochipinski's shot on a mini 2-on-0 went wide. At 10:38 of the second period, a major penalty was called on Air Force forward Will Gavin. The Tigers capitalized with three goals on that power play. Jordan Biro scored at 12:40 on a shot that was going wide of the net, hit an Air Force defenseman and went into the net. Less than a minute later, Matthew Gleason put back a rebound of his own shot for a 4-0 lead at 13:22. Sixty-one seconds later, Brett Chorski scored from the top of the crease for a 5-0 lead. After the goal, Falcon goalie Alex Schilling was replaced by sophomore Maiszon Balboa.
Air Force (2-4-0 overall) got on the board early in the third period on the power play. Mitchell Digby drew a penalty and the Falcons capitalized. Luke Rowe set up Nate Horn in the right circle and Horn netted his second of the season at 1:41. A major penalty was called on Air Force defenseman Luke Robinson and the Tigers scored two more power play goals. Nate Schweitzer scored on a 5-on-3 at 5:19 and then Nicklas Andrews scored at 7:20. After the goal, Balboa was replaced by freshman Guy Blessing. Coffey rounded out the scoring with an even strength goal at 11:19.
Colorado College outshot Air Force, 28-17, in the game. The Tigers were 6-for-11 on the power play while Air Force was 1-for-5. Â
"Before you can win, you first have to learn to not beat yourself," head coach Frank Serratore said. "We had a good first period and we were only down a goal. But we took way too many avoidable penalties and Colorado College took advantage of our careless play. We were very undisciplined."Â
Air Force opens Atlantic Hockey play next weekend as the Falcons travel to Niagara Falls, N.Y., to face Niagara, Nov. 5-6.
