U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Sophomore Peninah D'Souza set a new school record with a perfect score of 600 in the air rifle as No. 6 Air Force defeated No. 9 Nebraska, 4701-4678, in a dual meet Saturday, Nov. 20, in Lincoln, Neb.
D'Souza broke the school record of 599 that was set by freshman Scott Rockett earlier this season. Along with her smallbore score of 579, D'Souza's aggregate score of 1179 tied as the best on the day. Rockett also shot an 1179 with a 581 in smallbore and 598 in air rifle.
"We have many team members closing in on the elusive 600 score in air rifle," head coach Launi Meili said. "Peninah was the first to break through and she has shot consistently in both events over the season. With Scott's 599 a few weeks ago, we knew someone soon would be hitting that milestone. The great thing about our team is that they push each other every day in the right direction."
Seniors Peter Fiori and Devin Schwindt each shot an 1171 with identical scores of 580-591. Senior Ryan Habeck shot an 1165 (581-584), junior Jordan Williams shot an 1160 (570-590) and freshman Lauren Hurley came in at 1155 (563-592).
"At the President's Trophy, Jordan Williams was the top air shooter with a 597," Meili said. "He and Peninah tied with that awesome score and he had more center shots to break the tie. Many of our team members have had personal bests already to start the season, but our goal is to finish stronger that we start so the effort keeps marching on."
Nebraska won the smallbore, 2326-2320, but the Falcons were dominant in air rifle, 2381-2352.
Air Force (7-1 overall) and Nebraska battle again on Sunday, Nov. 21, at 8 am CT in Lincoln, Neb.
