LOOKING AROUND THE NATION
Five Falcons are ranked in the top 25 of this week's national indoor standings, including a pair of 5000-meter runners – Mahala Norris (12th, 16:00.94), Sam Gilman (15th, 13:48.36) – that are listed in the top 15. The men's distance medley relay is listed 19th (10:13.78a#), while Mitch Lipe and Cole Lindhorst are ranked 21st (pole vault, 17'3") and 23rd (mile run, 3:59.28), respectively. In addition, Jake Hall (26th – high jump, 6'11"), Greg Skage (28th – pole vault, 17'0¾"), Braeden Holcombe (29th – heptathlon, 5168) are ranked in the top 30.
SQUAD GOALS
This week's USTFCCCA #EventSquad rankings – which are determined by using the cumulative season-best marks from a team's top-four athletes on the national descending order list – feature four Air Force event groups ranked in the nation's top 10. The heptathlon is ranked fourth and the pole vault is ranked sixth, while the 5000-meter run and high jump are both listed seventh.
RECORDS WERE MADE TO BE BROKEN
Breaking the famed four-minute barrier in his first race at the mile distance, Cole Lindhorst set a new Academy record at the Iowa State Classic on Feb. 13. With a debut time of 3:59.28, Lindhorst became the first Falcon to run a raw sub-four, while deleting 0.49 seconds from the previous altitude-adjusted record that had stood for five years. The only freshman to place within the top seven, Lindhorst finished second amongst collegiate runners and third overall.
THE LONG BLUE LINE
Cole Lindhorst is no stranger to the Air Force Academy. His father, Chris – a member of the first Air Force cross country team to claim a conference championship (1991, WAC) – and mother, Grace (O'Neill), combined for 11 cross country and track letters before their graduation from the Academy in 1994. Lindhorst is one of two second-generation distance runners on the Falcons' team, as Frank Rossi's father, Frank Sr., was a four-time letterwinner in cross country and track prior to his 1986 graduation.
COMING UP
Air Force continues its two-week homestand next week, when it welcomes some of the nation's top teams to the Academy for the three-day Championships at the Peak meet on Feb. 25-27.
