U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Willie Reim scored with 1:17 left in overtime as Air Force defeated Canisius, 4-3, in an Atlantic Hockey game, Friday, Feb. 19, at the Cadet Ice Arena.
With Air Force leading 3-2 with under two minutes left, Canisius (7-3-0 overall, 7-3-0 AHA) pulled the goalie for the extra attacker. With 1:38 remaining, Keaton Mastrodonato tipped in a shot by Logan Gestro to tie the game at 3-3. In overtime, Reim controlled the puck below and the goal and looked to feed Bennet Norlin out front. However, the puck redirected off the stick of a Griffs' defenseman and into the net for the game-winner.
Canisius broke the ice late in the first period as Jackson Decker's centering pass found Ryan Miotto on the back door with 34 seconds left in the opening period.
Air Force (2-9-1, 2-9-1 AHA) fired nine shots in the first 4:30 of the second period, but Griffins' goalie Jacob Barczewski kept the net clean. The Falcons kept the pressure on and scored two goals in the final six minutes of the period. Reim tied the game with 5:50 left in the second. Brandon Koch's long outlet pass was right on the tape of Reim at the far blue line. Luke Robinson also assisted on the play. After Reim drew a penalty, the Falcons took the lead on the power play. Max Harper collected a loose puck at the goal line and fed Koch at the left point. Koch's blast found the back of the net with 2:10 left in the second.
Early in the third period, Canisius tied the game on the rush. Grant Snyder dropped a pass to Jack Lyons who netted his first career goal at 2:05 of the third. Air Force regained the lead midway through the third period. Ty Pochipinski won a faceoff in his own end and Luke Robinson slid the puck across to Koch at the center point. Pochipinski worked his way into the slot and redirected Koch's shot for his second goal of the season and a 3-2 lead with 7:48 remaining.
Air Force had 39 shots in the game, the second most this season, while Canisius had 21. Alex Schilling made 18 saves for the Falcons while Griffs' goalie Jacob Barczewski had 35. Air Force was 1-for-2 on the power play. The Griffs were 0-for-2.
"I think we had some rust in the first period," head coach Frank Serratore said. "I felt we got progressively better as the game went on. I couldn't be more proud of our boys. After a long layoff, we had a little rust, but then we found our game. We deserved to win the game."
The Falcons and Griffs close out the two-game series on Saturday, Feb. 20, at 5:05 pm MT at the Cadet Ice Arena. Prior to the game, the Falcons will honor the eight seniors in the class of 2021.
