2/3/2021 11:26:00 AM | Women's Volleyball
The Falcons will face the Rams at Moby Arena on Friday (Feb. 5) and Saturday (Feb. 6).
After a delay of more than five months, the Air Force volleyball teams kicks off its abbreviated season this weekend, when it travels to Fort Collins to face preseason favorite Colorado State on back-to-back nights (Feb. 5-6) in Moby Arena.
MEET INFORMATION
Both matches of the Falcons' weekend series will take place at 7:00 p.m. (MT). Due to the on-going pandemic, spectators are not allowed inside Moby Arena. A webcast and live stats will be available for both matches (direct links to both can be found on the team's schedule page at GoAirForceFalcons.com).
AIR FORCE IN SEASON OPENERS
The Falcons hold a 24-20 all-time record in the first match of a new season (11-13 at the Division I level).
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
This is the first week of the season for both Air Force and Colorado State. The Rams, who were picked as the preseason favorite in the Mountain West and are currently receiving votes in the latest AVCA Coaches Poll, went 29-2 and undefeated in conference action (18-0) last season. Colorado State placed three players on the league's preseason team, including Breanna Runnels – the preseason player of the year.
HOW THE 2020* SEASON WILL PLAY OUT
Due to the on-going coronavirus pandemic, the Mountain West delayed the 2020 season to a 16-match, conference-only schedule to be played in the spring of 2021. Schools will face the same opponents twice during the first six weeks of the season, before playing the remaining four schools once in the final two weeks, during a more traditional scheduling format.
RECORD BOOK WATCH
Two seniors enter the delayed 2020 season already ranked among the program's Division I career standings. Alex King is listed third in digs (984), while Andi Ahlers is ranked seventh in double-doubles (18) and eighth in assists (1752).
WELCOME TO THE SHOW
The Falcons added eight talented freshmen – Madison Felker, Allie Griffith, Joi Harvey, Savannah Neal, Caroline Reinkensmeyer, Aaryn Scires, Amber Soto, Gabby Wilson – to their roster for the 2020 season.
CONNECTING THE DOTS
There are some unique connections between several freshmen and the Air Force volleyball program. Caroline Reinkensmeyer and Gabby Wilson both played on club teams at Colorado Juniors in Monument, where Wilson's coach was former Air Force head coach Matt McShane. Joi Harvey, who spent the 2019-20 season at the Academy's Prep School with Aaryn Scires and Amber Soto, rejoined her former Arizona Revolution club teammate Taleah Cooper when she joined Air Force's team. Wilson has one more connection to the Academy, as her coach at Pine Creek High School was former Air Force volleyball player Molly (White) Stowers.
HOME SWEET HOME
The Falcons are scheduled to host four weekends of volleyball at Cadet East Gym this winter, as part of the Mountain West's conference-centric schedule. The Falcons open the home slate with consecutive matches against San Jose State (Feb. 12-13), before hosting New Mexico (Feb. 26-27) and Fresno State (March 5-6) on back-to-back weekends. Air Force will close out the home portion of its season with contests against two different opponents – Wyoming on March 25 and Boise State on March 27.
FALCONS EARN HIGHEST PRESEASON RANKING IN SIX YEARS
Air Force was listed eighth in the Mountain West Preseason Coaches' Poll this year, which equals the Falcons' highest preseason ranking in six years – and the second-highest placement since the league expanded to 11 teams at the start of the 2013 season. Collecting its second-highest preseason point total since joining the Mountain West (33), the Falcons' No. 8 ranking marks just the sixth time in 21 years that Air Force hasn't been picked to last.
