Air Force snapped an 81-set skid to the Rams on their home court with the 25-23 first-set win.
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Air Force volleyball team claimed its first-ever 'set' victory at Moby Arena this evening (Feb. 5), as it kicked off its delayed 2020 season against defending conference champion Colorado State. The Falcons won the opening set by a 25-23 margin – its first set win ever on the Rams' home court, before suffering 17-25, 19-25, 11-25 losses.
Junior Bailey Keith paced the Falcons with nine kills and two aces, while senior Cambria Galloway added eight scores on .263 hitting and registered one of the team's two solo blocks. Senior Andi Ahlers (16) and freshman Caroline Reinkensmeyer (12) combined for 28 assists, while senior Jordan Daniels collected a match-best 17 digs and another pair of aces.
After surrendering the opening point of the match, Keith (kill) and freshman Gabby Wilson (ace) tallied back-to-back points that gave Air Force a lead (2-1) it wouldn't relinquish. The Falcons pushed its advantage to four (10-6) behind a pair of kills from both Galloway and classmate Mackenzie Robertson, as well as single scores from Wilson and junior Vittoria Juarez. A solo block from Galloway helped Air Force take a five-point lead (13-8) and forced the Rams into a timeout. Colorado State evened the set at 16, but Keith put down a kill to halt the run and help Air Force push its lead back to three (19-16). Colorado State closed the gap to one (19-18), but the freshman duo of Wilson and Aaryn Scires put down kills on back-to-back plays for another three-point lead (21-18). The Rams cut back to within one and eventually tied the set at 22- and 23-all, but back-to-back scores from Wilson and Galloway secured the 25-23 victory for the Falcons – the first win in a series that has featured 27 road contests dating back to 1995.
Kills from Daniels and Keith, as well as an ace from sophomore Sarah Markwardt helped Air Force jump out to a 4-0 lead in the second, but the Rams scored 11 of the next 14 points to take an 11-7 lead. The Falcons pulled within one (14-15) behind a kill from Juarez and an ace from Daniels, but a 7-2 run by Colorado State helped the home team even the set at one with a 25-17 win.
The Rams struck first in the third set, but a kill from Galloway and an ace from Reinkensmeyer allowed Air Force to tie the set at four. Freshman Joi Harvey put down kills on three of the Falcons' next four points, while an ace from Keith helped the Falcons take the lead (8-7). Colorado State responded with six-straight points, before Wilson (kill), Ahlers (ace) and Markwardt (kill, ace) helped Air Force pull within one at the 14-15 mark. The Falcons recorded kills from Keith, Harvey, Markwardt and sophomore BrookeLyn Messenger, but CSU claimed the set by a 25-19 decision.
Another ace from Daniels tied the fourth set at two, but Colorado State jumped out to a 13-5 advantage and doubled the Falcons up at the 18-9 mark. Harvey earned her first collegiate block and Air Force collected kills from Keith (two), Galloway, Messenger and Markwardt, but the Rams completed the comeback with the 25-11 win.
The Falcons return to Moby Arena tomorrow night (Feb. 6) for a rematch with the Rams at 7:00 p.m. (MT).
