USAFA, Colo. – Air Force Academy men's swimming junior Isaac Gwin earn an invitation to the 2021 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, announced Wednesday, March 10, with the release of the official psych sheets. The Western Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Year has earned a spot in the 100 back, 100 free, and 200 IM.
Gwin becomes the third AF swimmer in the last two seasons to earn a spot in the NCAA Championships, after 2020 grad Zach Nelson and sophomore Wen Zhang earned spots last season. Both earned honorable mention All-American status after the 2020 NCAA Championships were canceled.
Gwin earned his invite on the strength of his 100 back time, which is 31st in the nation (46.36). He also earned NCAA B cut times in the 100 free (43.40) and 200 IM (1:45.98) to earn the right to swim those at nationals as well.
The Leander, Texas native had an outstanding WAC Swimming & Diving Championships, as he won three individual events, was a part of a winning relay, and set two school records. In the 200 IM, Gwin won the crown with a 1:45.98, which broke the previous 200 IM time set in 2016. He then went on to win titles in the 100 back and 100 free to become just the third AF men's swimmer all-time to win three individual titles in a single conference championship. He finished off the weekend by swimming a leg in the winning 400 free relay, which set a school record time of 2:53.25.
