It was the first career goal for the junior
USAFA, Colo. – The Air Force Academy women's soccer team knocked off Mountain West rival Wyoming with a 2-1 double overtime golden goal Thursday, March 11, at the Lacrosse Practice Field. Junior Tatiana Limon was the hero, as her 103rd minute goal was the game winner in a thrilling first win for the Falcons in the spring 2021 season.
The Falcons kept up high offensive pressure all game, as they registered 25 shots, with 14 of them on net. AF also held a decisive advantage in time of possession, with 57 percent to Wyoming's 43 percent. On defense, senior Danielle Katz registered five saves, while the backline held Wyoming to just eight total shots.
Air Force's first goal was off the foot of junior Natalia Gutierrez on a penalty kick, the first goal of her Falcon career. Limon's goal, also the first of her career, was assisted on a nice pass from senior Emma Nelson.
The match began with some heavy offensive pressure on both sides, as both teams combined for seven shots in the first 20 minutes. The offenses continued to click down the stretch of the first half, as it ended with an 11-5 difference in favor of AF, while both teams had five tries on net.
In the second half, Wyoming found the net early, as they scored in the 59th minute on a corner to make it 1-0. The Falcons then had a few opportunities, but none found pay dirt, leading to the final few minutes of play. In the 87 minute, freshman Cassi Bych drew a foul in the box, leading to the penalty kick from Gutierrez. The junior buried it on the right side to tie it up and send it to OT.
Following a scoreless first ten minutes, the Falcons got a break early in the second OT period. Nelson was able to flick a nice ball over to Limon on the left side, and she slid a shot into the top left corner of the twine to end the match for the Falcons with a 2-1 double OT thriller win.
The Falcons will be back in action next Friday, March 19, for its first away match of the 2021 spring season. AF will take on Utah State in Logan, with a start time of 1 p.m. MT.
