CHAPEL HILL - Air Force dropped a 15-5 contest to No. 2/1 North Carolina, Saturday afternoon, at Dorrance Field. The Tar Heels remain undefeated at 8-0 while the Falcons drop to 1-5 following a tough stint against the NCAA's top teams.
A narrow 3-2 North Carolina lead in the first quarter turned into a 10-2 lead by the halftime break as a scoreless Air Force second quarter became UNC's insurance policy with the Tar Heels putting up seven second-quarter goals to Air Force's zero. The Falcons caught some defensive traction in the third quarter as they held North Carolina to just one goal while scoring one of their own. Air Force was unable to make any magic happen at Dorrance Field, scoring just two goals by the end of regulation.
Sophomore attack man Ethan Grandolfo put up a hat trick on four shots, including Air Force's final two goals of the game. Senior teammate Matthew O'Rourk assisted Grandolfo in his first goal. Junior teammate August Johnson was the first to light the scoreboard via Quincy Peene's assist. Peene, one of Air Force's top scorers, took a team-high seven shots with three coming on frame. Younger brother Gavin Peene took four shots on the game.
Freshman Aidan Tolen, who has tallied a point in every game played this season, scored a goal in the third quarter, ending a 30-minute Falcon scoring drought.
Quentin Carlile and Vince Lombardi anchored the Air Force defense with two caused turnovers apiece while combining for three ground balls.
Air Force employed two face-off men in the game; Brian Michael went .500 at the X (6-12), while teammate Brenden Crouse won 45-percent of his attempts (5-11) at the center dot. Michael and Crouse snagged four ground balls apiece. UNC's Zac Tucci took the majority of face-off attempts, winning 10-of-18.
Braden Host and Jason Rose combined for 13 saves on the day, stopping nine and four shot attempts, respectively. The Tar Heels' Collin Krieg, who is 8-0 in goal, recorded 10 saves on the game.
North Carolina's Chris Gray put up a game-high eight points on six assists and a pair of goals. Teammate William Perry led the squad with four goals.
Next up, The Falcons open up the Southern Conference slate for the last time as a conference affiliate, taking on Bellarmine, March 27, in Louisville, Kentucky. Face-off is slated for 12 p.m. ET at Frazier Stadium.
