A goal in the 80th minute ended up being the difference
FT. COLLINS, Colo. — The Air Force Academy women's soccer team fell short in a 1-0 setback to Colorado State Friday afternoon, March 26, at the CSU Soccer Field.
The Falcons registered eight shots in total on the day, with four on net. AF also had four corner kicks to CSU's one. Sophomore Catherine Bakken had two shots, with one on net. With a shallow bench, AF had five of its starters play all 90 minutes.
Both teams had a few opportunities in the first 25 minutes, as CSU led the shot total by a slim 4-2 margin. From there, AF out-shot CSU, 2-1, over the final 20 minutes of the first half. AF also got a pair of solid free kick opportunities, but nothing could be done with them, resulting in a 0-0 first 45. In the first start of her Falcon career, freshman GK Cammi Bych registered four saves in the first half. She finished with seven on the day.
The first 30 minutes of the second half were similar to the first, as each team registered just two opportunities on net. CSU broke through in the 80th minute, as they netted what ended up being the game winning goal. Down the stretch, AF registered a couple corners, but nothing on net, clinching the 1-0 final.
AF will return to the pitch Sunday, March 28, for a match at Wyoming. Kickoff against the Cowgirls is set for 1 p.m. MT.
