In a pair of midweek games, Air Force fell to Kansas by final tallies of 13-3 and 7-4. In the opener, AF tallied 10 hits to reach double-digit knocks in a single game for the 13th time in 2021. Freshman Paul Skenes tallied three hits in each game, marking three-straight three-hit games.
Skenes The Super Freshman
Freshman Paul Skenes has simply been not only of the best freshmen in both the MW and NCAA, but one of the best overall players as well. While he ranks in the top-10 in the MW in nine offensive categories, the rookie also ranks in the top-150 in the nation in six offensive categories, including 94th in batting average and 74th in hits per game. He is also 50th in the nation in saves with four, which leads the MW.
Skenes has been extremely versatile for the Falcons this season, as he has made starts at catcher (10), first base (2), and DH (14). He has also made his eight pitching appearances in games in which he started in the batting lineup.
AF Top-50 in the RPI
Entering the week, AF has been placed in 44th by the NCAAs Rating Percentage Index (RPI). This season, AF has been ranked as high as 19th in the RPI, thanks to its 18 games on the road compared to just three at home, and 9 wins over teams in the RPI top-100.
The next-highest Mountain West team in the RPI is UNLV at 82nd. AF swept UNLV in the lone series between the two teams in 2021.
Saving the Best for Last
AF has had some late inning magic in 2021, with two walk off wins and five wins where the winning run was scored in the ninth inning or later. In fact, AF has out-scored its opponents by a 24-7 margin in the ninth inning or later.
Winning the Tight Ones
With another one-run win in the series victory over UNLV, AF moved to 5-0 on the season in one-run games. This includes two walk-off wins to win by one run. AF is also 1-0 in two-run games.
On the Horizon
The Falcons return home for its second MW Conference home series of the season, this one coming against Nevada, April 24-25.
