Three Falcons with career-best performances
USAF ACADEMY - Falcon lacrosse cruised by VMI with a season-high 18 goals, holding the Keydets to just four on the game in a Saturday afternoon Southern Conference matchup at Falcon Stadium. Air Force is back in the win column with a 3-7 overall record and a 2-2 record in the league. VMI drops to 1-8, with a 0-5 mark in the SOCON.
The Falcons had a highlight reel day, registering a season-high 28 points via season-high marks in goals (18) and assists (10). Air Force also tallied season-high tallies in shots (51), shots on goal (31), and caused turnovers (13). Three Falcons registered hat tricks for the first time in a single game this season.
Sophomore attacker Ethan Grandolfo impacted the record book with his six goals and eight points, tying for fourth in both single-game goals and single-game points. He added a pair of assists and led the squad with 11 shots on the day. Senior teammate Ben Ward had a career-day, scoring five goals on 10 shots while Brenden Crouse, who previously set the standard for single-game points (6, vs. Mercer), scored four goals on 10 shots for his second hat trick this season.
Matthew O'Rourk, Chad Tereskey and Gavin Peene rounded out the scoring unit for Air Force. Peene recorded a game-high two assists while Crouse, O'Rourke, Tereskey, Tommy Hellman, Brian Michael and Chase Douglas recorded assists.
The staunch Falcon defense anchored by Quentin Carlile and Vince Lombardi held the Keydets to just one goal per quarter. Carlile posted a season-best four caused turnovers, leading an Air Force defense that helped VMI to 13 of their 24 turnovers.
Sophomore goalie Jason Rose earned the win in his first career start, making four saves against seven shots on goal. Rose was also good for two caused turnovers. Senior 245-pounder Noah Schwab saw five minutes of action in the Air Force cage, making three saves.
A season-high four Falcons were victorious at the face-off X, led by Brian Michael's eight wins in 14 attempts, followed up by Dylan Frankhouser's six wins in nine attempts. Braden Gaab and Nick Capannelli won their single attempts, helping Air Force to 16-of-26 wins at the center dot. Michael picked up a game-high six ground balls.
VMI was led by Scout Ripley with a pair of goals and Michael Santos with a goal and two assists.
Next up, Air Force hosts High Point for Senior Day on Saturday, April 24. Faceoff is slated for 11 a.m. MT, at Falcon Stadium. The Falcons are looking to redeem the loss from the 2019 meeting where Air Force fell 13-9 at High Point.
