Air Force travels to Mountain West Championships

This Week: Air Force travels to Tucson, Ariz., for the Mountain West Championships, Friday-Saturday, April 30-May 1, at the Tucson National Golf Club. Tee times will begin at approximately 8 am MST each day. The teams will play 36 holes on Friday, with the final 18 holes being played on Saturday. Live scoring will be available at www.GolfStat.com.
About the Field: Along with Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, Nevada, New Mexico, San Diego State, San Jose State, UNLV, Utah State and Wyoming will compete for the conference championship. Five of the 11 teams in the conference are ranked in the top 70 in the nation. San Diego State is the highest ranked team at No. 25, followed by New Mexico (29), Boise State (60) and Nevada (65).
The Lineup: Senior Kyle Spencer will play in the No. 1 spot, followed by sophomore Isaac Layne, junior Luke Trujillo, junior Colter Baca and freshman Aaron Kuznik. In the opening round, the Falcons tee off of No. 10, beginning at 8 am MST.
About the Tournament: The Mountain West Championships return after a one-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Championship will be held at the Tucson National's Catalina Course, the host of the tournament from 2007-2017 and in 2019. The Catalina Course has hosted more than 30 PGA Tour Events and also hosted the 2006 NCAA Regional. Past PGA winners at the Catalina Course include Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, Tom Watson, Johnny Miller, David Duval and Phil Mickelson.
Last Time at the MW Championships: In 2019, a stellar final round jumped the Air Force golf team into a 10th place finish at the MW Championships at the Tucson National Catalina Course. The Falcons fired a final round 287 (-1) to move ahead of Utah State on the final day. The 287 was the best at the MW Championships since 2017. Luke Trujillo, a freshman at the time, shot a two-under 70 in the final round. Trujillo was the Falcons' top golfer over 54 holes, tying for 35th at 217 (+1). Jonathan Farmer, a freshman at the time, came in at 220 (+4). New Mexico started the day in third place, but won the Mountain West title with a 14-under-par 274 in the final round. The Lobos shot an 831 (-33) over 54 holes, to finish three shots ahead of Colorado State (834). Fresno State was third (-26), UNLV was fourth (-25) and San Diego State was fifth (840).
Recently: Senior Kyle Spencer led the Air Force golf team on the final day of the Ping Cougar Classic, Saturday, April 24, at the Riverside Golf Club in Provo, Utah. In the final round, Spencer made three birdies on the back nine for an even par, 72. Sophomore Isaac Layne was the top Falcon over the two-day tournament, finishing at 222, shooting 73 in the final round. Spencer shot 224 over 54 holes, followed by Jonathan Farmer shot 231, Colter Baca shot 234 and Luke Trujillo shot 236. San Francisco, ranked 28th in the nation, won the tournament at 823 (-41). Boise State was second at 836 and the host school, BYU, was third at 838. Air Force placed 20th at 908 (+44).
Inside the Numbers: Sophomore Isaac Layne leads the team with a 75.87 season stroke average. He has played all 15 rounds this season. Senior Kyle Spencer is second at 76.00 (15 rounds) and junior Luke Trujillo is third at 76.67. Trujillo has the season low round of 65 at the Pizza Hut Pat Hicks Invitational. Spencer's season low is 69, also at the Pat Hicks. As a team, the Falcons average a 304.75 per round with the season low of 291 at the Pizza Hut Pat Hicks Invite.
