USAF ACADEMY – Air Force dropped a Friday evening match up against Denver, 1-0, at Cadet Soccer Stadium. The Falcons drop to 1-4-1 on the season while the Pios improve to 4-1-1.
Air Force and Denver played a tight match up to the 77th minute where a foul just over the 18-yard line yielded a set piece to Lukas Fisher who finished high and just out of Kainoa Likewise's reach, lifting the Pioneers to a one-nil lead late in the match.
The Falcons had shooting opportunities, taking eight shots on the match with two on target, but were ultimately unable to find the back of the goal. Air Force pushed the intensity until the final seconds, taking a pair of shots in the waning minutes.
Lathan Spadafora and Tristan Trager led the offense with three shots apiece while Giuliano Daniel took two. Both keepers, Likewise and Denver's Will Desantis, finished the match with a pair of saves each.
The Falcon defense was anchored by team captains Jared Dove and Giuliano Daniel who defended for 90 minutes.
"Unfortunately we lost to a very good team," head coach Doug Hill said. "It was a good back-and-forth battle, but they controlled the possessions. We had some dangerous chances as well but it ultimately comes down to is who can put the ball away. They scored a nice goal on a set piece. We had some good individual performances that are going to make us better for conference play."
Next up, the Falcons play the last of a four-match home stint as they open the Western Athletic Conference slate against San Jose State at Cadet Soccer Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 25. Kickoff is slated for 11 am. The last time the teams met was in the 2020-21 WAC Tournament where Air Force came from behind to beat the Spartans in PKs, 2-2 (4-3 PK).
