Golfers host Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational

The 52nd tournament features 21 teams and will be played at the Eisenhower Golf Course, Sept. 10-12
THIS WEEK: The Air Force golf team will host the 52nd annual Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational, Fri.-Sun., Sept. 10-12, at the Eisenhower Golf Club. The team competition will be played on the Blue Course. On Friday and Saturday, golfers will play 18 holes each day with tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m. (MT). Sunday's tee times will begin at 7:15 am (MT). All individuals will play on the Silver course with a shotgun start at 9:30 am on Friday and Saturday and 8:30 am on Sunday. Live scoring for the team competition will be available on GolfStat.com.
THE FIELD: Along with Air Force, the 21-team field includes Army, Cal-State Northridge, Colorado, Denver, George Washington, Nevada, New Mexico State, Northern Colorado, Northern Iowa, San Jose State, Southern Illinois, SIU-Edwardsville, Southern Utah, UC Davis, UNLV, Utah State, Utah Valley, UTEP, Weber State and Wyoming.
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT: The Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational is in its 52nd season. Formerly known as the Rocky Mountain Invitational and the Pikes Peak Invitational, the event was re-named the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational in 2003 to honor the legendary coach who headed up the Air Force program for 25 years and is a member of the Air Force Athletics' Hall of Fame.
EISENHOWER BLUE COURSE: The Blue Course of the Eisenhower Golf Club opened in the 1959 and is named after former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who took part in the dedication ceremony. The 7,541 yard, par 72 course was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., and is currently ranked as the third best military course in the nation (PGA.com) and the 24th best college course (Golf Week) in the country.
LAST TOURNAMENT: The Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational was cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2019, Colorado won the 18-team tournament with an 854 (-10). Air Force was fourth, tying for its best finish since 2013, at 862 (-2). Northern Colorado was second (859, -5) and UC Davis was third (861, -3). Southern Utah's Jake Vincent won the individual title in a playoff. Vincent was tied with Northern Colorado's Jack Castiglia and Coby Welch at 209 (-7) after 54 holes. With pars at both No. 10 and No. 18, Vincent won the individual title.
ABOUT THE FALCONS: Air Force returns seven of the eight golfers from last season. The Falcons are led by seniors Colter Baca (team captain), Jonathan Farmer and Luke Trujillo. Trujillo was second on the team in stroke average last season. Farmer was fourth on the team and Baca was fifth. Junior Isaac Layne was one of four Falcons to play in all six tournaments last season and was third on the team in season stroke average.
TYLER GOULDING NAMED INTERIM COACH: Former Falcon standout Tyler Goulding is the interim golf coach. A 2007 Academy graduate, Goulding has spent the past five seasons as an assistant coach to George Koury, who recently was named associate athletic director for recruiting at the Academy. As a member of the Academy's golf team, Goulding was a two-time team captain (2006, 2007) and three-time MVP (2005, 2006, 2007). He did not miss an event in four years, posting 15 top-10 finishes. A two-time all-conference selection, he completed his final three years with stroke averages of 72.8 (senior), 73.0 (junior) and 72.9 (sophomore). Goulding returned to the Academy in the summer of 2016 after spending three seasons as an assistant at the University of Southern California.
