Falcons struggle to make shots, lose in Vegas
1/29/2022 8:12:00 PM | Women's Basketball
LAS VEGAS, Nev.- A tough afternoon from the field proved costly for the Falcons, as Air Force was defeated 72-54 at UNLV.
Four Falcons finished in double-figures, including Cierra Winters, Kamri Heath, Dasha Macmillan, and Lauren McDonald. Winters led Air Force with 11 points, with Heath, Macmillan, and McDonald all finishing with 10. Saturday becomes the 13th-consecutive game Winters has managed at least 10 points. She also blocked three shots and snagged a pair of steals.
Coming off of a double-double on Thursday against San Diego State, Haley Jones finished with a game-high 15 rebounds, tying her career-high. The conference leader in offensive rebounds, seven Jones' 15 boards were of such a variety.
Air Force did a number of things well, including limiting themselves to only nine turnovers, but the Falcons were unable to create confidence on the offensive end of the floor. The Falcons ended the afternoon shooting only 28%, including 3-19 from behind the three-point line. The inability to connect on shots was not limited to a single moment in time, either. The Falcons never eclipsed the 33% mark in any of the four quarters of play.
The Falcons started well, having led by as many as five points with just under three minutes remaining in the opening quarter, but the lead was short-lived. A Lady Rebels three-pointer at the first-quarter buzzer saw the home team take a 15-13 lead into the following period, a lead that was never again relinquished.
Coach Gobrecht's team trailed only by six at halftime, though UNLV was the more offensive team in the second-half. The Lady Rebels connected on 54% of their shots over the final 20 minutes, while the Falcons saw only 28% of their shots fall through over the same stretch.
Next, Air Force returns home to play Wyoming on Wednesday, February 2. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 pm MT.
