SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Nevada is currently 8-9 on the season and improved to 2-4 in conference play after picking up a road win at Wyoming (3-2 win) last Saturday. The Wolfpack is ranked second in the league in digs, with a 15.54 per-set average, while Hikialani Kaohelaulii holds the same individual placement with a 4.21 average. San Jose State, who will host New Mexico on Thursday night, enters the week as the only undefeated team in the Mountain West and holds a 12-4 overall record. The Spartans, who lead the league in assists with a 12.81 average, are ranked second overall in hitting (.250), kills (13.65), aces (1.65) and blocks (2.58). Individually, the Spartans are led by Jiana Lawson, who is hitting .432 for the second-highest average in the conference, and Sarah Smevog, the recipient of the last three MW Defensive Player of the Week awards, who is ranked third in the league with a 4.12 average.
BY THE NUMBERS
The Falcons' all-time series with Nevada is tied at 10, after Air Force evened the record with a home sweep of the Wolfpack last fall, while Air Force holds a 5-14 lifetime mark against San Jose State. Half of the Falcons' 10 wins over Nevada have come at Virginia Street Gym, but Air Force has only won once at Spartan Gym (2014).
JUMPING FOR JOI
Joi Harvey is ranked among the top 30 in NCAA Division I with a 1.34 blocks-per-set average (28th). Her 16 solo stops are tied for third in the nation, while her 83 total blocks are tied for sixth and her 74 assisted stops are tied for 11th.
AROUND THE CONFERENCE
Air Force enters the week ranked second in the conference in blocks-per-set (2.40), while holding top-five rankings in service aces (1.64) and opponent hitting (.200) in overall matches. In addition, a pair of Falcons are ranked among the league's top 10 in multiple categories, including Joi Harvey – who is ranked second in blocks (1.29) and third in hitting (.362). Caroline Reinkensmeyer and BrookeLyn Messenger are tied for ninth in aces with a 0.33 per set average, while Reinkensmeyer is also ranked within the top 10 in assists (5.37, 10th).
THE BIG 5-0
Caroline Reinkensmeyer registered a career-high 50 assists during the home contest with UNLV on Oct. 8. With that performance, Reinkensmeyer became just the fourth Falcon in the last decade to reach the 50-assist mark – joining Andi Ahlers, Sarah Hellman and Hillary Keltner. Ahlers set for Air Force during its last 50-assist outing (2019, vs San Diego State), while Hellman and Keltner both reached that plateau multiple times during their careers.
COMING IN AT NO. 1
BrookeLyn Messenger was featured as the top play during the Oct. 8 edition of SportsCenter Top 10. During the Falcons' match against UNLV, the senior made a play-saving dig while leaping over the first row of seats, before hustling around the chairs to get up for a block and then connect on a kill for the Air Force point.
WHAT'S ON DECK
With the first half of the conference's home-and-home schedule complete, the Falcons will split next week against the two teams they'll face just once this year. Air Force will host Fresno State at the Academy on Thursday, Oct. 20, before traveling to California to face San Diego State on Saturday, Oct. 22.
MATCH INFORMATION
The Nevada match at Virginia Street Gym will take place at 6:00 p.m. (PT) on Thursday, Oct. 13, while the San Jose State contest will be held at 1:00 p.m. (PT) inside Spartan Gym on Saturday, Oct. 15.
