Air Force Falls to Nevada on the Road

Sarah Markwardt and Joi Harvey tied for the team lead with nine kills apiece.
RENO, Nev. – The Air Force volleyball team dropped a four-set contest to Nevada this evening (Oct. 13) in Reno. After winning the first set 25-20, the Falcons fell in 12-25, 22-25, 22-25 sets at Virginia Street Gym.

Senior Sarah Markwardt and junior Joi Harvey led Air Force with nine kills apiece, while Markwardt hit a team-high .320 (9-1-25) and Harvey added a match-high six blocks, including four solo stops. Junior Caroline Reinkensmeyer led all players with 35 assists, while classmate Amber Soto added seven helpers and led the team with two aces. Reinkensmeyer registered a double-double with 12 digs – a statistical category led by sophomore Murphy Riggs, who registered 18.

Markwardt struck first and Air Force quickly took a five-point lead on the Wolfpack (9-4), as Harvey and senior BrookeLyn Messenger each tallied three kills and Riggs served up an ace. Nevada pulled within two at 10-8, but back-to-back strikes from Markwardt and sophomore Mac Russ helped push the Falcons' advantage back to four (12-8). Another pair of kills from Markwardt sent Air Force into the media timeout with a 15-11 lead, while a kills from Messenger and Harvey, as well as a service ace from freshman Jordan Suan, returned the Falcons' lead back to five (18-13). The Wolfpack pulled within two (19-17, before Markwardt tallied a kill and solo block on back-to-back plays for another four-point advantage (21-17). Reinkensmeyer and freshman Savanah Johnson added kills, as Air Force took the opening set by a 25-20 margin.

Markwardt got the scoring started again for Air Force in the second set, putting down a kill for the Falcons' first point (1-2). Johnson tallied a kill and teamed up with Harvey for a block, as Air Force evened the set at four. The Wolfpack used a 6-1 run to take their own five-point lead (11-6), while a kill and two blocks from Russ (one assisted with Reinkensmeyer, one assisted with Johnson) put the Falcons in double figures (10-14). Â Johnson and Messenger added kills, but Nevada evened the match with a 25-12 victory.

The teams traded the next six points, with Russ (two) and Johnson (one) accounting for the Falcons' scores. A kill from Russ put the Falcons in double digits (10-17). Harvey and Johnson teamed up for a block, while a pair of kills from Messenger and back-to-back service aces from Soto brought the Falcons within four (16-20). Air Force pulled within two (22-24) following a pair of kills and service ace from freshman Ashley Bible, but Nevada tallied the final point for the 25-22 victory.
