Second Half Surge Propels Air Force Past Houston Christian, 3-1

HOUSTON, Texas – Air Force came from behind to the steal the victory at Houston Christian, 3-1, Sunday afternoon at Sorrels Field. The Falcons, now on a seven-match win streak, improve to 7-4-2 with a perfect 6-0 mark in the Western Athletic Conference. The Huskies drop to 5-7-5 overall with a 1-4-3 mark in conference.

Despite the Falcons controlling the offensive possessions in the first half, HCU's Valentine Iheanyiogu was the first to strike just moments before closing the first half via assist from D'Alessandro Herrera (43'). AF took seven first-half shots to the Huskies' two.

Air Force's second-half goal production came courtesy of the defense and midfield as Tyler Johnson scored the equalizer via Thaddaeus Dewing's assist in the 49^th minute. The goal marked the first for Johnson this season.

The Falcons took the lead with a set piece as Remi Smith assisted Jake Chaffetz in his first goal of the season via header. Less than two minutes later, Johnson struck again with a header for added an insurance goal via set piece service from Jacob Angeletti. The goals mark Johnson's first of the season and is Chaffetz's third this. Angeletti tallied his sixth assist this year.

Outside of scoring, the Falcon defense can be attributed for quelling the HCU offense despite the Huskies having a more aggressive offense in the second half. Chaffetz, Johnson, and senior team captain London Aghedo clocked 90 minutes of staunch defense on the match. The defense has not given up more than a goal since the win-streak began on September 25.

Senior John Byszewski won his seventh-straight in cage, making four saves on the match. His counterpart Alex Aitken recorded five saves against 15 total AF shots.

Next up, the Falcons return to USAFA for their last home-stint of the regular season. Air Force hosts Sam Jose State on Friday (Oct. 28) and Seattle U for Senior Day on Sunday (Oct. 30). The Falcons will be tested as SJSU is currently second in the league while the Redhawks sit at third—both teams with four wins to their credit. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
