U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo.- The Air Force women's basketball team moved to 3-0 on the season for the first time since 2005-06, defeating Adams State 74-66 in Clune Arena on Wednesday night.
Head coach Chris Gobrecht's 58th career Air Force victory reset the record for all-time wins by a head coach. Gobrecht now boasts three all-time win records, having already earned the honor on two previous stints at Yale and Washington, respectively.
The Falcons' (3-0, 0-0 MWC) offensive effort was headed up once again by senior Kamri Heath, who posted 22 points on 11-18 (.611) shooting, six rebounds and four steals on the night. Heath has led the Falcons in scoring for three-consecutive games, and ties three other Falcons (Kayla Pilson, Jo Huntimer, Taylor Britt) in steals with seven on the season.
Sophomore Madison Smith made her first career start on Wednesday, logging 12 points, four steals, an assist and one block, marking her second double-digit scoring contest in the Falcons' first three games.
In the opening quarter, it was Smith fueling the Falcon offense to the tune of six points, followed up by freshman Emily Adams' five, resulting in an 18-12 Air Force lead to close the first.
Seven Falcons accounted for 21 steals on the night, with Heath, Smith and freshman Milahnie Perry each gathering four apiece. 14 of those steals were converted into 27 points on the other side. Smith led the pack with six points created on three steals; Perry trailed closely behind, with five points created on three steals.
After a four-minute scoring drought for the Falcons to open the second, Perry was able to reignite Air Force scoring, putting up a quick five points off of a successful paint attempt which resulted in a shooting foul and made free-throw. Perry then managed to steal back possession and made an easy attempt at the ASU basket for a rapid five-point boost to the Air Force tally. Perry closed the first half leading Air Force with eight points and ended her night with 11- the first double-digit outing of her collegiate career.
Air Force came out from the break and caught Adams State on its back foot, opening the second half on a 10-0 run generated by four steals in ASU territory, two of which were made by Smith.
Heath took control of the game in the second half, scoring ten and eight points in the third and fourth quarters to keep the game just out of reach for the Grizzlies. Heath, with the fourth quarter down to its final minutes and the Falcons only leading by seven, made good on a jumper assisted by Huntimer, then in the same minute made her fourth steal of the night off an errant Adams State pass attempt to clear mid-court and went for an unassisted layup, growing Air Force's lead to 11 with two minutes remaining in regulation.
The Falcons resume their 2022-23 campaign in Boulder on Saturday, facing Colorado at 2 p.m.
